Of course this album sounds fantastic. Not really surprising since most pressings from Japan sound great.- The mastering on this CD version is best I’ve heard! You can hear nuances that enhance the awesome music even more!!

I love this album (and Crash Landing) for what it is. Classic artwork too!- Edited 9 months ago

Midnight Lightning contains some of Jimi's most inspiring, loose, relaxed, intense playing ever IMO. Another review here suggests "morose and listless" and I could not disagree more. I think these were loose low pressure settings that allowed some magic to happen. Listen and decide for yourself! Once you hear the source material that is now available it becomes very apparent how much skill and effort was put into creating this album and how lucky we are to have it. I do not listen to any of the other Alan Douglas productions they just don't compare. The versions of Hear My Train (Mitch on drums), Machine Gun, Gypsy Boy, Midnight Lightning, Trash Man, Once I Had A Woman- some w nice bg vocals- are just fantastic. Every track is great and the order as well. To me this album is a rare gift created from material that was not nearly as cohesive to start. There is an interview w the session drummer that describes the incredible attention to detail that went into learning the material and playing across the varied tempos and idiosyncrasies. Jimi's vocal is up front- tight- a touch of reverb and delay- the whole album benefits from the studio treatment/editing. I give this rare gem 5 stars. (PS- look at Wikipedia page- the session players were great!) - Well heres one of the infamous posthumous releases where they erased bass and drum tracks and replaced with session players. It had been years since i played this. And its not as bad as i remember. Jimi’s guitar playing is amazing even with the studio added reverb etc.. some of these have been released in their original versions.. on boots and subsequent releases..
- Edited one year agoOne of two controversial Hendrix LPs produced by Alan Douglas. Basic tracks laid down by Jimi with lotsa posthumous edits and overdubs by session guys. Midnight Lightning has even less on it to recommend than Crash Landing. Possibly the most morose and listless Hendrix has ever sounded. I bought this new in 1988. No barcode, thin vinyl and came in a poly liner. For completists and the curious only.
