Released on 8 October 1988.
Although mostly black metal, the album includes some of the first examples of Viking metal. According to the book "Black Metal: Evolution of the Cult" by Dayal Patterson, it began a second trilogy, an era Quorthon described as the "pre-Christian Swedish Viking Era"
"For All Those Who Died" lyrics were taken from a poem by Erica Jong, first published in her book "Witches" in 1981.
"A Fine Day to Die" the first three verses are taken from "Cassilda's Song" of Robert W. Chambers' The King in Yellow.
"Outro" is not listed on the cover, and is not included on the cassette release.
Cover artwork is taken from the painting The Wild Hunt of Odin (1872) by Peter Nicolai Arbo. The painting as well as the opening track "Oden's Ride Over Nordland" use the Wild Hunt motif from folklore.
Blood Fire Death established this motif in metal culture, where it since has become popular with a number of bands and event organizers.
In 2009, IGN included Blood Fire Death in their "10 Great Black Metal Albums" list.

This had cheap bootleg vibes. Terrible muddy sound that seems to be sourced from a VG vinyl copy, complete with ticks and crackle. Artwork also done on the cheap, flat colours and unsharp. If I ever run into a better version this will turn into a frisbee.

This is the only way to fully enjoy the sound of this album, sadly all of the other versions i've heard have pale in comparison, sad that this is so expensive. Maybe in terms of sound it tends to be too bright but everything here sounds defined and Quorton's voice sounds incredible.

I have the lyric sheet for this but I don't have the album. I did have it but don't remember what happened to it - probably sold or swapped. The lyric sheet I thought was lost, but was inside another LP.
I never had the opportunity to compare but have been happy with my CD version from the early 2000s. Now I'm curious.
However I have the latest (2014?) 180 gram vinyl of "The Return" and I'm happy with that, it sounds great and does sound better than the remastered CD but then again it's all about the Hi Fi equipment one player to another, one phono card to another etc.
