Notes

Manifesto is the sixth from eight studio album by English rock band Roxy Music. It was released in March 1979. On the original vinyl release, side one was labelled "East Side" and side two was labelled "West Side".

After "Dance Away" became a hit, the second pressings of the album substituted the original version with its single remix. Later on, the LP version of "Angel Eyes" was also replaced by the re-recorded version released as a single. The original CD versions of the album used the revised track list, until the LP version of "Angel Eyes" was restored in the 1999 remaster. Manifesto was finally released on CD in its original version on The Complete Studio Recordings box in 2012. The first LP version ‘Angel Eyes’ first appeared on the U.S. compilation CD “The Atlantic Collection” while the first LP version of “Dance Away” appeared on CD for the first time in 1995 on the "The Thrill of It All" box set.

Performed by:
Paul Carrack, Bryan Ferry, Andy Mackay, Phil Manzanera, Alan Spenner, Paul Thompson (2), Gary Tibbs

VERY nice UK pressing of Manifesto. Angel Eyes on this version is the "Disco/Dance" version with the harp...I love both versions of Angel Eyes but prefer the dance version maybe because I heard it before I heard the more rockin' version when I got the CD back in 1999 or so...

Dance away the criticisms! Sounds pretty great for it’s time.

This German pressing of Manifesto sounds good as all of Roxy Music albums. Here we have nice analog recording and open and crisp sound from very late 70's. The music is somehow a litle bit psychodelic for me.

This pressing has the 'rock' version of 'Angel Eyes' which clocks in at 3.32, not the disco-style single version of 'Angel Eyes' which clocks in at 3.06 and appears on my UK copy (Polydor – POLH 001 2335 201). Both are great but I actually prefer the frustratingly short single version, the extended dance re-mix of which appeared on 12" and is heavenly!

This pressing has the disco-style single version of 'Angel Eyes' (at least mine does!) which clocks in at 3.06 not the 'rock' version which clocks in at 3.32. My US issue (ATCO SD 38-114) has the rock version of 'Angel Eyes'. Both are great but I actually prefer the frustratingly short single version - and the extended dance re-mix which appeared on 12" is heavenly!

Really pleasing remaster - warm analog sounding. A nice dynamic remaster. No complaints. ( well maybe one - I prefer the. Disco version of Angel Eyes)).

Following an almost four-year recording hiatus, with their previous studio Siren album back in 1975, Roxy Music return with Manifesto making it their sixth studio album, released in March 1979 by E.G. in the United Kingdom, Polydor in Europe and Atco in the United States.

The first single from Manifesto was "Trash", which peaked at number 40 on the UK Singles Chart.
                      "Are you customized or ready-made?
                      Heavy metal trick or treat?
                      Only seventeen
On the level trash is neat"

The second and third singles were re-recorded with a more disco flavour for their 7" single release, "Dance Away" was more successful, peaking at number two in the UK on 26 May 1979, beaten to the top spot for three weeks by Blondie's "Sunday Girl". It became one of the band's biggest hits, and was also the ninth best-selling single in the UK in 1979. The song was also released as a 12" extended version (running at six and half minutes), a format that had started to become popular in the late 1970s, while "Angel Eyes", which was far more electronic and "disco" in nature than the power-pop album version. An extended 12" mix was also released. The single also made the UK top five, peaking at number four in August, after these two songs became a hit, the second pressings of the album substituted the original versions with the new ones,my copy on vinyl is that, and side one labelled "East Side" with side two being "West Side".
The album itself peaked at number seven on the UK Albums Chart.
In the United States, the album peaked at number 23 on the Billboard 200, making it Roxy Music's highest-charting album in the US.
Manifesto is a worthwhile attempt to make both form and content match its own internal preoccupations. It speaks of Ferry's continuing personal dilemma (which, put coarsely, boils down to the eternal choice between leather or tweed, between women who dare and women who care), and it wishes to satisfy those who bought "Virginia Plain" while making genuflections to present-day American radio culture.

The cover design which featured a variety of mannequins (a concept also used for the covers of the singles from the album), was created by Bryan Ferry with fashion designer Antony Price

Currently reading Jonathan Rigby’s excellent book Both Ends Burning which led me to check which version of Dance Away was on my album (this version being the closest match for matrix and black inner sleeve) and it does indeed have the 4.21 original and not the later 3.45 single mix.
