Nina Hagen – In Ekstasy

I remember it was a cult release at those times in USSR, Siberia. We found it as her best record and it still rocks today. Despite working with different producers the record sounds absolutely consistent.

While I rated the English language release `Nina Hagen in Ekstasy' *** stars, I actually do not care for the sound and quality of the German language tracks recorded for this version, as, to my knowledge, the songs on this LP were initially written by Nina in English and soon after were rewritten and translated into Deutch texte and recorded for this edition. Most of the tracks simply fall flat or miss the mark entirely on `In Ekstase,' particularly lacklustre (in comparison to their English counterparts) for me are `Universelles Radio,' `Vater Unser,' `Gott in Himmel,' and `Russicher Reggae,' and whilst most of the remaining songs are a bit better and do actually include some remixed and revised musical accompaniment + substantially differently presented chorus' and melodies by Miss Hagen herself, unlike her previously produced effort `Angstlos' this particular German language version was not as interesting a listen as it's almost-identical twin had been, nor did it excel aesthetically or technically and to a strictly novice enthusiast and fan, I felt that it was not up to par nor as proficient and satisfying a listening experiece as `In Ekstasy' was!! Still, you know though, just between you and me, we all actually bought this LP just so we could rock out to `1985 Ekstasy Drive', one of the three tracks that were (intelligently) not altered, re-recorded nor translated into it's sister language in order to appear on this album. Also, Nina's appearence on the album cover is among her very best and certainly sexiest and most suggestive.

The most danceable of Nina's albums and maybe the most accessible. She is still as far out as ever but she channels it on this record in a way that seems more approachable and less frightening. If I could only have one Nina Hagen album I would make it this one, but who wants to only have one :-)
