Notes
Songwriting for this album began in 1987, but due to the suicide of vocalist Per "Dead" Ohlin and the murder of guitarist Øystein "Euronymous" Aarseth, the release was delayed until May 1994.
This is the band's only studio album to feature Aarseth and Varg "Count Grishnackh" Vikernes.
Vocalist Dead started to write the lyrics when he joined the band in 1988.
In 1990 studio versions of the songs "The Freezing Moon" and "Carnage" were recorded, appearing on the CBR Records compilation album Projections of a Stained Mind
Drummer, Jan Axel "Hellhammer" Blomberg, claimed that the lyrics of "Freezing Moon" were "meant to make people commit suicide".
Dead said in a 1989 interview by Marduk guitarist Morgan "Evil" Håkansson, published in Slayer fanzine, that by then he had written the lyrics for "Funeral Fog", "Freezing Moon", "Buried by Time and Dust" and "Pagan Fears"
Finished versions of these songs appeared on the album Live in Leipzig, a concert recording from November 1990 which was released in 1993.
It is considered one of the most influential black metal albums of all time.
In 2017, Rolling Stone ranked De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas as 40th on their list of 'The 100 Greatest Metal Albums of All Time.
The title De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas is a Latin phrase meaning "The Mystery of the Lord Satan", with "Dom" being an abbreviation of "Dominis", often used as an honorific prefix for ecclesiastics of the Catholic Church.
The album cover is a monochrome photo of the east side of Nidaros Cathedral in Trondheim, Norway.

Good Album, but they should keep the Dead vocals.. i dont like Atilla- Edited one month agoThe reissue of the No. 1 Black Metal album of all time left mixed impressions.
Probably, first of all It would like to express a misunderstanding about how this masterpiece got into the hands of the Back on Black, this album clearly deserves a more solid label and a more respectful attitude. After the album fell into unreliable hands from this undertakers in 2010, a version with a terrible design is published from year to year. Pixel cover, low-grade reproductions of photos without contrast, typos, etc. I don't want to say that Back on Black fed shit to several tens of thousands of people... but it is rather unpleasant to face such indifference. It remains to be hoped that someday the copyright holders will break contract with these businessmen who hate music, and this album will be released in a more worthy form - not like this cheap one!
In terms of sound, everything is very good. And it is for the sake of sound that it is worth having this record in your collection, having previously thrown out the gatefold. There is depth, dynamics and volume here. Yes, this record doesn't sound very loud, but still vinyl perfectly reveals this record. If compared with the CD version, the vinyl has a slightly greater emphasis on the rhythm section, due to which the album sounds more attacking and dense. But they didn't forget about guitars either, "the necrosound" is as it is and rare solos sound like a knife blade on glass. However, it does not lose its magical / mystical properties and is able to hold attention again and again. If we turn to the technical data, then in almost all tracks DR 11 - not bad for a new-made vinyl with an old record. Otherwise, the vinyl playbacks clean and quiet, so nothing will prevent you from being alone with the Mystery of the Lord Satan and unraveling it.
Of course, this particular edition deserves a lower rating, but in the current realities it will not change anything. Just know that if you decide to purchase this album, the press level doesn't match to the status of the band and the album. - Not the best pressing of this album. Cover is very hard to read, purple on black, as well as the record sounds very quiet and scratchy, which is not how this particular record is supposed to sound. Redeeming qualities are the music itself as well as the awesome colour of the vinyl, this purple variant is beautiful.
- Musically:
Awesome album and Milestone of Black-Metal.
Historically:
In the entire history of music this is truly a CURSED CD!
...and having it in my hands has a very particular effect .... - Looks bad compared to the mighty Darkness Shall Rise edition with correct art work, lyrics and sound.
- OHHHH this version sound great.... Very quiet too!!! very happy... this is a fucking MASTER PIECE!!!!
- THE masterpiece of black metal.
Just as rare like Deathcrush, burzum sarcofago inri. Buy it if you have the chance! - Edited 6 months agoMy copy has these rounout variants
Matrix / Runout (Runout A): 83003E1/D
Matrix / Runout (Runout B): 83003E1/H
Bought sealed but it's warped. Sound is just fine.
