a curious enigma artist i discovered in February of this year and immediately was hooked. there are some absolutely fascinating compositions on this album that sound like they were from the future at the time they were produced. "fantastic man" obviously
been the crowning achievement but tracks like "love is blind" "Atomic bomb" and "something you'll never forget" are pretty steady stand outs too. all in all it wraps itself up nicely as a really nice introductory piece to Mr. Onyeabor's wall of work.

All three of my LPs are dead quiet, which is sadly rare these days. Great comp, great pressing.

There is a ludicrous amount of RAW FONK contained across these three discs, make sure you lace up your boogie shoes tight and that there is absolutely no dog dirt on the bottom of them as you WILL start to spontaneously shuffle, strut and slide across the living room floor when the needle hits the groove! P.S. Mam if you are reading, sorry again about the dog dirt on the lounge carpet, rug and sofa.

Bought a sealed copy and it contained only sides 3&4 and 5&6. Anyone else encountered this?

One of my best purchases of 2013, two years on this still gets heavy rotation when I feel the need for funk. Atomic Bomb ties I Wanna Be Your Dog for best sleigh bell tune. Fantastic Man is always great for when you need a little emotional lift. And When The Going Is Smooth And Good is there to remind you that this too shall pass. Heavy vinyl, full rich sound.

Amazing compilation of the obscure and mysterious Nigerian electronic music pioneer William Onyeabor. I became obsessed by his music when I heard "When The Going Is Smooth And Good", a lo-fi cosmic synth funk epic with an almost chicago house jack feel during the breakdown. I was listening to a lot of African music at the time, but I'd never heard anything like this from any of his contemporaries. Plus, I already knew and liked another track of his, "Better Change Your Mind", which was a bit closer to other Afrobeat and Afro-funk that I'd heard, but it still had that slightly spaced out feel and some great synths. Now I was thinking, who is this William Onyeabor? And what other amazing music has he made? A few of his tracks have popped up on other compilations over the years but most of his output has only been available on extremely hard to find 30 plus year old original vinyl copies which were only ever released in Nigeria. Finding his music isn't easy, and even if you can find an original vinyl in good condition, they can be very expensive, $700 plus for some of his most prized LPs.

Needless to say, I've been waiting for this compilation for a long time! I'm very grateful to Luaka Bop, I know it took them a long time and a lot of effort to put it together. It's fully licensed from William Onyeabor, and the remastering job is pretty good. I assume it's been remastered from vinyl copies, so it's not perfect, but the originals weren't mastered that well a lot of the time anyway, and you can only make the best of what you've got.

If you're interested in funk, african music, experimental electronic music, synthesizer music of the 70s and 80s, the history of what would become electro, house, techno and modern electronic dance music, you need to check this out.

Highly Recommended!
