I bought the bullet and paid extra for the new BONGLOAD re-issue. Surface noise aside, it appears to be the best sounding this of this release...at least for now.

Probably same plates used by PLAIN for this pressing. Almost made the mistake of buying this.

Meh.. Vinyl is fine, not much in the way of surface noise. Mastering is flat and lifeless.. This material deserves better!

The quality of the cover/sleeve art is inferior to the Bong Load reissue - I compared them side by side. Wish I'd known ahead of time of the connection to the the Plain mastering - this will stay unopened and promptly be returned to UMe. Disappointing.

This pressing, to me, has been revelatory. I have listened to this on CD front to back for years and years and have never heard the depth or acoustic vibrancy that is present here. Granted, I returned my first copy due to a very small pressing dimple at the beginning of "Everybody Cares.." only to have it appear once more on the replacement, but a few seconds of low bass tick is nothing compared to the transparency of the album. It was too good to keep fussing with my local about such a small defect.

The pianos and keys, especially, have been lifted up into the foreground of most songs, in a very, very good way. Same with vocal harmonies. Even the lyrical annunciation seems to be improved. Surface noise? Yeah, a little bit..but I would gladly pick a little noise behind dynamic reproduction over a flat, lifeless soundstage that happens to also be silent. YMMV.

Maybe there were bigger duds than mine, but if you really love this album then I'd say it's worth chancing it. If this was, in fact, sourced from hi-res, then consider me converted!

..at least until a legitimate, respectable analog pressing [finally] exists.

I just picked this up yesterday. Bear in mind that I do not have any other pressings to compare this to, so I'll take Kaitou's word for the source. I do have the Plain Figure 8 pressing which was mediocre at best, expensive paperweight at worst. The price of this Geffen pressing is what it should be. It's on the low end of the price spectrum, which is fine considering the quality. The album art is decent and I assume they had access to the original artwork and did not need to scan the CD artwork. While it's nice to look at, you still want to know how it sounds. Well, it's stuffy and muddy as all hell. You have to crank this pressing up to notice details, which I assume is the same issue people had with the Plain pressing. That's typically my experience with Plain. Disappointing? Yes. Silver Lining? Price.

Heads up, this pressing uses the same mastering/plates as the notorious Plain Recordings pressing.

Unfortunately, even though the mastering is really good with plenty of dynamics and air, there are far too many pops and clicks for my liking on my copy. This ruins the experience during the quieter moments. In particular, the a cappella 'I Didn't Understand' is unlistenable with loud pops and crackle throughout. It's a shame as the sound quality is a significant step up from the CD. The label has admitted that these reissues are sourced from hi-res files so why not just release them and save everyone the hassle of having to deal with substandard pressings?

Plain doesn't make real albums. They rip a CD to 180 grams of terrible vinyl with zero quality control. Runt. Get out of the business and stop screwing up all the good albums.
