Ol' Dirty Bastard – Return To The 36 Chambers: The Dirty Version

We are emailing you to provide an update on Ol’ Dirty Bastard Return to the 36 Chambers.

In March, we featured Ol’ Dirty Bastard’s Return to the 36 Chambers as our Hip-Hop Record of the Month. Due to the demand, that title was oversold, and we were forced to make the tough decision to delay the record for a small handful of folks, to ship in June.

Around the time that copies were landing on customers doorsteps, we started getting reports of a pressing defect on disc two of Return to the 36 Chambers. In the last minute of side D, on the final track, “Harlem World,” the audio cuts out during the intro, in a very strange way.

We then started to investigate exactly what happened — the file was corrupted when being transferred to be lacquered — and because it happened on beat, it was extremely difficult to catch during our QA processes. But that doesn’t sit well with us: We want this to be the best version of the album that’s ever existed. So, we had new lacquers cut, and had to work out with the label about how to ship this, and how to make sure the tests were perfect for this new edition, which took more time than we’d have liked.

But, finally, we have an update:
If you received your copy of Return to 36 Chambers already, come October, you will be shipped a replacement disc 2, with the corrected version of “Harlem World.”
If your copy was delayed entirely, you will receive your copy of the album — with the corrected version of “Harlem World” — in October as well.
We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this delay may have caused, but hope this update can clear up any confusion surrounding this issue. If you have any questions, please feel free to respond to this email and our team will be happy to clear things up for you!

Surprised I haven't seen this mentioned here yet, but the track list and credits on the inner gatefold weren't updated with the two extra songs (Dirty Dancin' and Harlem World). Those two songs aren't mentioned in the track list there and the track listing per record side wasn't updated for this reissue either. Kind of interesting VMP either missed that or decided not to update it. No complaints on the packaging or sound otherwise.

Probably my least-favorite trend or habit in old hip-hop is putting vinyl pops and crackles in their tracks. When you listen on vinyl it makes you wonder if the noise is part of the track or surface noise on your record and I find that very annoying. For example, the track "Dirty Dancing" has some intentional "vinyl surface noise" sound effects and it is somewhat off-putting.

This is a vibrant and humorous album, thoroughly entertaining. This is the first time I ever heard this record, and, to my ears, it sounds fine. This is not an audiophile record or anything you would use to show off your system, but it's a fun record. One of the benefits of a club like VMP is that you are introduced to music that is way outside your comfort zone. I mostly listen to classical and jazz; of course I knew who ODB was, but I don't think I ever heard his music before.

I have the Newbury press and now this one and the cover pictures are extremely different in quality. I still love VMP pressings, def the best going atm.

I don`t get the criticism from other buyers. The gatefold cover is made with so much care. With the foil, it looks like a real ID card. The sound is really clean. Top notch pressing, at least mine is. Yes, you need to add bass, but any decent stereo can do that. This is the definite pressing in my eyes and ears.

I’ve been a VMP member since 2021 and I can honestly say I’ve never purchased a double LP track from them where at least one record was not warped. These LPs are shockingly flat, I was stunned lol. If only all their records would arrive this way.
I do wish the bass was stronger, but it sounds nice and clean otherwise and looks beautiful! Glad to finally have this legendary LP on wax.
