referencing Stolen Paintings (CD, Album) 015
An underrated album. Well recorded: layered but clear and well balanced with lots of forward-thinking ideas. Features a variety of Aotearoa's more seasoned jazz players, while drawing on '80s/'90s European and Japanese Acid Jazz, Jobim (as track 8's title suggests), Morricone, a dash of ECM and a good dose of musical irony. One foot in jazz, the other in soundtracks, enough melody for the heart and a fair few interesting time signatures & conceptual spaces for the head.
Check it out if you get the chance - it's also pretty rare.
