Around 2007 (by the time "Systematic Chaos" was released) Dream Theater stopped moving me.

So, I started looking around for a progressive metal band that would be able to take their place.

Even though at the time I was already into the genre's other main bands (mainly Opeth and Pain Of Salvation), I was specifically looking for a band that could match DT's unique ability to fuse technical and songwriting mastery with their instinct when writing beautiful melodies.

I kept searching and in 2010 I found Haken and "Aquarius".

I was not blown away immediately, but something kept me coming back to the album until it finally clicked; the guys definitely had the technical chops and sure knew how to write interesting musical passages without forgetting the importance of a good melody reigning over the whole thing.

Being a debut album you could tell the band was looking for its voice, trying elements that would not appear in their later albums, like the brief growling vocals passages in "The Point Of No Return" and "Streams" which felt a little forced but, overall, the wide range and tasteful songwriting was certainly impressive, and I soon found myself digging it.

I think that the major strength of "Aquarius" is its wide scope, that manages to take you in a journey and avoid the sameness that plagues so many contemporary progressive metal albums and there are two songs here, "Streams" and "Celestial Elixir", that are still counted among my favourites out of the whole band's catalogue due to their versatile songwriting and wide, fresh and open, soundscapes.

All across the album, you will always find hints and threads of beautiful melodies, and even the heaviest songs like "Drowning In The Flood" have moments of musical bliss like when Ross goes "I'm sorry I said with a sense of regret", or "All our journeys will end at the same destination" and "She may never return but I will wait forever" bit in "Streams" and "Celestial Elixir", respectively.

A remarkable debut by all means, that placed Haken on my radar and remains in my top 3 from the band's discography.
