Overall, this is a stellar set from one of the more underrated musicians of the bop era. The clean, uncomplicated sound that resulted from that grouping helps make it the best among his albums and a peak moment during a particularly strong period in his career. This Japanese King Record copy is a really superb sounding one ! Don't look further !
Beautiful mastering on classic recording. All instruments are perfectly rendered against a very quiet background, BUT I've now had 3 successive copies with a series of loud pops near the beginning of Paul Chambers' bass solo on the title track. The same pops in the same spot on all 3 copies. Clearly a fouled stamper or similar issue.

referencing Soul Station (LP, Album, Limited Edition, Reissue, Repress, Stereo, SRX, Gatefold) MMBST-84031
I dont know... of all all the SRX I was able to listen to, this was my least favourite. And please note this is one of my favourite albums of all time. I think a mono treatment would on the SRX would be the way to go towards a 5 star release. And in one way this is a bad release. It is just lacking that breathtaking factor the other SRX releases often bring to the listener.
Fantastic album by “The Middleweight Champ On The Tenor.” The issue I ALWAYS have with the Blue Note Classic Vinyl Series is PRE-ECHO on most of their albums. There’s audio Bleed-Through / Pre-Echo right before “If I Should Lose You” starts. Album plays fine, it’s flat, quiet without stitching / non-fill, so I don’t want to take a chance returning it for a worse copy.

This is a stunning release from Hank Mobley, circa 1960, with Winton Kelly on piano, Art Blakey on drums, and 'Mr PC' fulfilling bass duties. If you are a fan or connoisseur of le hard bop, This record may be in your top five faves, just sayin'.
Hank's tone is darker than counterparts Rollins or Trane, but his sound is just as huge. There's a moment near the end of his solo on "Soul Station" where he moves close to the mic and honks out a low note, that reminds you he's in the room. His lines are bluesy with a strong sense of swing, perfectly complemented by that of Winton Kelly, whose piano work is elegant and swingin'.
Highlights are "This I Dig Of You", "If I Should Lose You", and "Remember".
The recording was engineered by RVG himself, which always results in a great product. This Kevin Gray remaster is truly stunning. Great reissue. I must have for any jazz collection.
4.5 stars. Recommended.

As I started collecting jazz, I bought a bunch of these 1990s Blue Notes, both Connoisseurs and ones with yellow stickers like this. They are perfectly decent, and the vinyl is very quiet, but sonically, most of them don't stand up to vintage US or Japanese issues nor to the more recent work of Gray and Grundman. This is a standout, though--they did a great job on the mastering.
Sounds great but Side B has constant distortion and tearing sounds on Hank's tenor parts on 'Split Feelin's' and 'Soul Station'. Is this a tape issue and a side effect of AAA or a pressing defect? Not my system's fault for sure
Beautiful. Perfect pressing without any issues and deadquiet throughout after one round on the Okki Nokki. Sounds lovely.
Sensational musicianship and playing. I would put Hank up there next to Coltrane and Rollins as my favorite sax players. Who can deny Winton Kelly. He is up there with McCoy Tyler and Oscar Peterson. Then there is Art Blakey, this album just hits the spot. Superb mastering and audio quality through this album. Ranks as my favorite.
