Hank Mobley – No Room For Squares

Just got a copy of this and to echo other comments it sounds great. Maybe just in my head about the van gelder stamp on one side but to my ears side a does sound a little louder and clearer than side b. Same sessions so should be the same? Anyone else hear this?

Very good sounding record, I would say it was above average sonically but that's probably because Rudy Van Gelder did such a good job recording it. This pressing it seems is plagued with quality control issues but mine was in perfect shape, I did a cleaning just to make sure it was at its best. I know some don't like that this is from a digital source and it does not sound as good as the BN Classic Vinyl Series but I still think its worth getting under $30 until they make a better reissue.

Not wishing to doubt the experience of those who have good copies of this pressing, it does appear you can either hit or (really) miss. I've been lucky with several 75th anniversary pressings of other releases but this was a real dud - and I am not a sound quality fusspot. Label bubbling and peeling, and noisy as all get-out even after cleaning. Bought it new but I'd have graded it a strong VG if I were selling.

I suggest collecting pretty much any other pressing, rather than rolling the dice on this.

My copy is the same guys, Gelder and Stereo on just side A, mine isn’t the cleanest looking copy but still sounds killer. This old stuff is timeless isn’t it.😎

Fantastic album but let down by not-quite-there quality control on the pressing.

Blue Note 75 reissues have been spotty affairs & while the sound on this is good, my new copy came with hairlines, scuff marks & small pits throughout the record surface - a couple of skips & the sound isn’t smooth in these spots

Cant complain about the decent price point but Blue Note needs to do a better job on their classics reissues… they deserve a bit more love & respect

This is done to perfection, stands the test compared to the first editions. The bass comes through better, the details and space are there, maybe the record sounds a little less warm, but that is because the clarity is great. The highs are not earpiercing, yet natural. The absolute top of Hank Mobley in a beautiful edition, he weds his classic hard bop with some exciting innovations through the influence of the modal Miles and Atlantic era Coltrane.

This is a very decent hard bop release from Hank and friends.

Note that Lee Morgan and Herbie Hancock play on some tracks. They're placed with Donald Byrd and Andrew Hill on the others. A2, B1, and B3 are the strongest pieces, IMO.

I'm not terribly impressed with this BN75 reissue. My pressing(new/sealed copy) has clipping and a few unexpected digital artifacts/glitches, as well as a good deal of surface noise / crackle between tracks. This is after 2 thorough wet washings. Visual inspection reveals plenty of non-fill throughout. Bummer.

Early BN pressings are impossible to find these days, so if you want this recording, sadly this may be one of your only options and it's not a great one.

3.5 stars. Half star deduction for the crummy pressing.

Mine came with a dramatic scratch all the way through the 1st track which causes soft click here and there... Will keep it cause it is still enjoyable tho it came VG+ OOB. Master sounds nice.

The BN75’s can be a bit of a lucky dip as far as pressing quality goes but this Hank Mobley record is a good listen. Philly Joe Jones’ drums in particular are crisp and clear as well as the horns. No pressing issues, no surface noise, tics, pops or blemishes. Unless a better reasonably priced all analog reissue comes along in the future I’ll probably be happy to sit on this copy.

Yea, I was a bit worried because of all the negative reviews of 75th anniversary issues, but my copy of this one sounds great, and can't beat the price.
