The Durutti Column ‎– The Return Of The Durutti Column

Genre:
Style:
Year:
Notes:
First released in January 1980 in a sandpaper sleeve, inspired by Situationist Guy Debord's book 'Mémoires', which was housed in a sandpaper cover to destroy other books on the shelf. The sandpaper sleeve was assembled by members of Joy Division, A Certain Ratio, and others. While Ian Curtis did the glueing, the other members of Joy Division watched a porn movie in the same room. There were four editions of the sandpaper sleeve (total edition of 3600): FACT 14 sprayed (in black or white) and with 7"; no spray but with 7"; no spray and no 7"; or The Return Of The Durutti Column sprayed in black but without 7".
Initial pressings are on dark red translucent vinyl.
Some sandpaper copies included a flexi disc with two instrumental tracks by Martin Hannett.

Reissued in July 1980 in a black sleeve, with a painting by Raoul Dufy. The black sleeve editions come in textured and untextured versions. There are two versions of this album.
- The first and third pressings each have five tracks on the B side: the track "In 'D'" is actually a different mix of "Sketch For Winter" (matrices A1/B1 and A3/B3)
- The second pressing (matrix A2/B2) has six tracks on the B side: track B1 is new and uncredited, track B5 ("Beginning") is labeled as track B1 and track B6 is the different mix of "Sketch For Winter", labeled as "In 'D'". This configuration is also found on Italian and Japanese vinyl pressings, as well as on the CD that was part of FACD 224.

The first Japanese edition (JAL-1) has 10 tracks with new / uncredited track as B1 but the inner sleeve lists In 'D' A and In 'D' B. Same audio content as FACD 14 and FACT 14 A2/B2.

Both Japanese CD editions and FACD 14 credit In "D" but have Beginning and In 'D' (= Sketch For Winter (Version)) rolled into 1 track with overall track length of 4:10 (incl. 6 second silence). Same audio content as JAL 1 and FACT 14 A2/B2.

Remember when this came out. The whole LP is absolutely brilliant. Cracker of an album. Beats me why there isn't more music of this level produced today.

I have an interesting copy given to me by Steve Hopkins (Invisible Girls) and friend of Vini and Martin - indeed they played in bands together. Steve was often in the studio with Vini and this copy was one of the original pressings in a white cardboard sleeve before the sandpaper was stuck on! The sleeve is signed to Steve by Vini and Alan Wise (Factory Records Svengali). Matrix numbers are A side - FACT 14 4 PBG A1 F̶A̶C̶T̶ ̶1̶4̶ ̶A̶1̶ SOUND CLINIC EG S-4 B side - FACT 1̶4̶ ̶B̶1̶ 14 PBG B1 EG S-2

I have had a copy since 1982. This has the title in silver with identical layout/spacing to the black paint version. Is it likely to be a fake?

My vinyl has the Raoul Dufy cover and the following runouts:

Side A:
W-2 FACT 14 4PBG A1 FACT 14 [then something illegible] SOUND CLINIC EG
['FACT 14' is crossed-out]

Side B:
S-4 FACT 14 B 14PBG B1 EG
['14 B' is crossed-out]

Discogs lists something like this as matrix/runout "variation 3" of the sandpaper-covered version:
https://www.discogs.com/The-Durutti-Column-The-Return-Of-The-Durutti-Column/release/807151
but presumably my copy proves that some copies of "variation 3" came with the Dufy cover? I can't see this combination on Discogs; should it be added?

An absolutely drop-dead gorgeous album of harmonically sophisticated and tearjerking guitar compositions, minimalistically yet artfully woven and executed by Vini Reilly. It's a brief 28 minutes (and the especially short duration of side 2 - with one song being repeated in an alternate mix - really highlights this), but every track is intelligently concise, sucking you into its strikingly immersive world with every next set of multilayered notes Reilly plucks.

I'm serious - TRotDC is that otherworldly. It's that stunning a melancholy display of genuine human emotion.... the instrumentation is almost 'superhuman', as if Reilly had been playing with three pairs of hands at once.

OK, maybe I'm got a little out of control there, but either way, this is essential listening for those who like mellow, laid-back AND throbbing minimalistic music like I do. This gets my easy vote for one of the best albums of 1980.... and the 80's period. It's been an all-time favourite for over a decade, so give it a try if you're in the mood!

Ignore the sad sharks who are trying to sell this for £30+ - you can find it on Juno for a respectful £16. Discogs needs to do something about these fucking leeches that only buy to sell at a massive profit.

The glasspaper wasn't a good idea. It ruins the vinyl.

I wish I had read your reviews, guys, as my newly ordered mint copy has the same track listing. It's interesting but it doesn't quite work: Sketch For Summer is, after all, the opener of all openers. I have just tried to change the track listing on Discogs but it won't let me for some reason. Anyway, be warned everyone!

The last CD edition of "The Return Of The Durutti Column" by Factory Benelux, finally explains the complete mess of the side2 tracklist in many releases of this album:
http://factorybenelux.com/the_return_of_the_durutti_column_fbn114cd.html
http://www.discogs.com/Durutti-Column-The-Return-Of-The-Durutti-Column/release/5674888

"Beginning" is the 1:37 track B1 of the first and third UK pressing, shifted as track 5 in the second pressing.
Track B1 of the second pressing, lasting 2:37, is an "Untitled" track.
This is the original side 2 tracklist of first and third pressing:
B1. Beginning 1:37
B2. Jazz 1:38
B3. Sketch for Winter 2:25
B4. Collette 2:21
B5. In 'D' 2:31
This is the tracklist of the second UK pressing (maybe a wrong matrix?) used also for some foreign editions (ie Italy and Japan):
B1. (Untitled) 2:25
B2. Jazz 1:39
B3. Sketch for Winter 2:25
B4. Collette 2:23
B5. Beginning 1:40
B6. In 'D' 2:26
From the Factory Benelux page: "This new 2014 edition on Factory Benelux includes the 9 tracks included on the first Factory pressing, as well as all six 6 tracks which formed side two of the rare second pressing (tracks 14 to 19)."

"In 'D'" is actually a different mix of "Sketch For Winter", and the label of side 2 is the same for both pressing.
All this has produced a total confusion about the real titles of some tracks, both in LP and CD reprints, reissues, remasters...

---------------

P.S:
AAARRRGGHHH!
I've seen that the vinyl edition published by Factory Benelux, give the title "Beginning" to the track named "Untitled" in the CD!
http://www.discogs.com/Durutti-Column-The-Return-Of-The-Durutti-Column/release/5239211
While in the CD "Beginning" is the short track B1 of the first and third original vinyl pressings.
The nightmare continue... :-(
