In 1972, Paramount Pictures released director Francis Ford Coppola's adaptation of Mario Puzo's hit novel about the Corleone crime family, "The Godfather" to immense critical and commercial success, earning numerous Oscars in the process. It also resurrected the career of Marlon Brando as Don Vito Corleone, gave Al Pacino leading man status as the prodigal son Michael, accolades for James Caan as his fiery tempered brother Santino "Sonny" Corleone, and memorable performances from Francis' sister Talia Shire as the vulnerable Connie, and Diane Keaton as Michael's fiancee Kay.
Unfortunately, the score's composer, Nino Rota, didn't receive the golden statuette until 1974 for his compositions for "The Godfather Part II." His creation of "The Godfather Waltz," a solemn work for trumpet that became one of the most recognizable themes in cinema history, also gave a voice to the players in the dangerous-yet lonely world of its cosa nostra centered players, collectively represented by a lone trumpet.
Despite the protests of former actor and fashion house promoter for the Evan-Picone organization, studio chief Robert Evans disliked Rota's score (as well as certain casting decisions), Coppola remained steadfast in his choices. While Evans was one of Hollywood's greats, a driving force behind many of cinema's best films of the late 1960s through the 1970's, his creative input for this and other films was dubious at best. Like maverick directors such as Orson Wells, Sam Peckinpah, Brian DePalma, and Clint Eastwood, it is best to let certain artisans to pursue their visions without studio constraints.
Sadly, what's left of today's studios after cost-cutting mergers ultimately mandate the tone of their endless stream of remakes and sequels, with their appointed directors generally consideredd hired hands. Progress-or profits?
In 2022, La La Land Records commentorated "The Godfather's" 50th Anniversary with this limited double CD collection, including the original album program as well as alternate takes and source pieces by Francis' father, Carmine Coppola. With fellow Italian maestro Carlo Savina conducting The Hollywood Studio Symphony Orchestra, Rota's work is vividly brought to life in a polished, lushly performed manner. Newly mixed by Chris Malone with Doug Schwartz providing a much needed makeover to the studio housed masters.
Opening the first disc is the expanded score, with the "Main Title/Corleone Waltz #1" introducing audiences to this now famed motif. "Hollywood" and "The Horse's Head" were largely unused at Evans' behest. While the film version of the notorious horse head sequences' music appears in the "Additional Music" section concluding CD 1, Rota's original takes of these two cues are striking and inventively orchestrated.
As consigliore Tom Hagen (Robert Duvall) ventures to California to requests a favor of the stubborn Hollywood mogul Jack Woltz, a lively, brassy Golden Age styled cue plays colorfully. When Hagen is rebuked by Woltz, his "punishment" results in the murder of his beloved racehorse Khartoum. A brief quote of the "Waltz" is heard as strings and and kening woodwinds explode upon the tycoon's grim wakeup call.
The Christmas carol opening "Christmas/Prelude To Murder," another unused piece, begins with joy that quickly recedes as frightened strings emerge. Pensive piano match equally tired strings as "Bad Luck" befalls the family, while a "Sicilian Message/Meditation" reiterate the waltz.
An extended version of "The Halls Of Fear" is a toxic, insistent rumbling march accompanying Michael's urgent attempts to protect his fallen father. Lean and morose, "Set The Meeting/Michael Takes Over" emerges as he takes to avenging the failed assasination attempt on Don Vito, forever altering the course of his destiny. The bulging brass exclamation of the brief "Getaway" solidifies Michael's transformation from idealistic World War II hero to mob boss.
When it is discovered that "Sonny's Dead," a teary-eyed mix of strings and low brass reflect upon the loss, which hits Vito especially hard. An extended take for pipe organ, the “Baptism” features a montage of Michael's removal of his enemies while he attends his son's christening. The music also represents Michael's baptism by fire as he rises to the top of the mob world, an individual now feared by all in a life he never chose.
CD 2 features a remastered version of the old Paramount Records vinyl release, which combines sections of pieces heard in the film for a home friendly, yet somewhat fractured listening experience. Famed crooner Al Martino sings "I Have But One Heart." He portrays Johnny Fontaine in the film, figuring notably in the conflict between Don Vito Corleone, Hagen, and Woltz. (Martino would reprise his role in “Part III,” where he sings “To Each His Own”).
The "Love Theme" is backed by a chorus of mixed voices. The disc ends with a selection of band pieces composed by the elder Coppola.
A truncated version of this Golden Anniversary release is also available on a double vinyl package from the label.
In 2024, La La Land premiered a similarly structured 2CD jubilee version of Rota’s score for the sequel, of which I have provided analysis of elsewhere on Discogs.
Limited to 5,000 pressings, secure a copy now. For if you wait too long, you may have to seek a much higher priced Ebay copy with an offer you will not be able to refuse. - Of course, the music is great, so you wont be sorry buying this.
Anyway, I do feel like this release is a bit messed up, though. There are film versions, extended versions and tracks with material not used in the film all mixed together, and one cannot tell what parts of this are actually heard in the movie. Other La-La-Land Records releases, witch present the entire score separately from the unused material, are to be preferred. referencing The Godfather (Original Soundtrack Recording) (LP, Album, Stereo, Monarch Pressing, Gatefold) PAS-1003
If they are allowing uncredited "credits" above, then can someone help add a credit for "Trumpet" by Sidney M. Lazar? https://www.discogs.com/artist/5722207-Sidney-M-Lazar
I can't seem to figure out how to add or recognize his work on this movie soundtrack.- ?? There is only one entry with this cat# and just like the unsharp pics here since 13 yrs, there are no durations on my copy.
Anyone has a clue?? - Same feedback as JPFruitCo : a shame that this wonderful master is so degraded by so many pops and cracks all other the lp ! Many of them very loud. The european version may be better ?
- The album presentation is perfect — beautifully reproduced gatefold sleeve, flawlessly restored audio. However, both sides of my particular pressing have a significant amount of pops. They were present even after a thorough Spin-Clean wash — and they occurred in exactly the same places in the tracks each play-through, though, there were no visually noticeable defects. I ordered a replacement — and it was exactly as poor as the first — and in the same places. I wish I had a recommendation for a solution as the concept is wonderful. I ended up purchasing a sealed copy of the original 1972 release with much better (though dated) results.
