Still one of the most important and powerful records of the last 20 or so years. I revisit this so much. Great pressing truthfully.

Cannot speak to the other pressings of this record, (specifically the colored variants) but this one sounds phenomenal. That being said, its not all that different from a digital streaming source. For an A/B comparison, I used the highest quality version available on Tidal— which is apparently 44.1kHz/16bit (and yes, streamed through an appropriate DAC)—and a Project TubeBox S Preamp coupled with an Ortofon 2m blue cart.

The differences were subtle and, in my opinion, most likely due to the physical ramifications of carving sound waves into Polyvinyl Chlorides and Acetate. I sincerely doubt Mark Kozelek, the immutable cynic, (or anyone else) mixed and mastered a version specifically for the purposes of being pressed to vinyl. Although, I could be 1000% wrong about that, just going by my ears.

Still, on more intimate moments, like the opening of "Micheline" and the cathartic beauty of "Jim Wise," I couldn't help but feel that the vinyl version's guitar tones, along with Kozelek's affectionate vocals, had an extra bit of bass and punch to them. While the more "sonically busy" tracks like "Ben's My Friend," sounded nearly identical.

Basically, if you love this album as much as I do, don't fret if you're not able to fork over a hundred plus dollars for a copy on vinyl—I can assure you, you're not missing out on aural nirvana. But if you have the cash and enjoy tangible media and art, the plain black pressing seems the way to go.

This album is interesting as a transition. I really is the beginning of the end. Benji is probably the point where I think Mark lost some of his older fans (which he probably gets a kick out of) and gained a new audience. This is the album where Mark's singing started to transition into spoken word rambling and where he appears to have left the songwriting up to whatever came out of jam sessions with his new band.
Do artists have a right to evolve and change their sound? Of course! Just as I have the right to stop buying their albums.
Did I give the other albums a shot? Yes I did, and every single one with the exception of a few tracks on the first collaboration with Jesu are just not anywhere near as appealing to what one could hear on Admiral Fells, April, Ghosts, etc. I am so glad I got to see him live when it was still just him and his acoustic guitar and am thankful for the music he put out into the world, up until Benji.

Just picked up the clear vinyl, I have no complaints at all. Sounds excellent! This album is a treasure. I’m very pleased.

Can confirm that it sounds great. Very minimal surface noise, only really noticeable (but far from distracting) on the first track of Side B for me, and the mix is dope.

I really wish this would get scheduled for a 180 gram repress sometime soon

I own this clear version, nothing spectacular but seems to sound alright; everything I wanted at least. I read that the black pressing faired the best on average, anybody know if there is that much of a difference across the colors?

My yellow copy has no issues. It’s dead quiet and sounds great on all four sides.
