Frankly screw all this I bought the Amazon copy which came in a bag and then the cardboard... No defects that I saw in the album itself... Side 3 and Side 4 basically took the experience and crushed it a little bit which to me sounded like a Kevin Gray mastering.... I mean did he fucking do it all or not.... All I know and I'm not sure this is 100 percent confirmed ... That the 16 multi track of all the entire takes and everything every tape that had to do with the recording of the release of WGO 1971 Motown Records was FOUND. Meaning to me screw the Marvin Mix and screw the original mix.... Just bake those 16 multi track tapes hopefully by Scotch Tape and have someone as close to God as possible to remix the 50 years old recording with the 50 year old multi track tapes I believe once again they used a 16 track machine and use 32 bit 784 KhZ and remix from scratch this damn album already... So we are not confused about who mixed what or who mastered what... Because this is 50 years on we have 50 year old tapes that should sound like they were recorded yesterday in 1970/1971 and just put OUT THAT RELEASE PLEASE ON A DIGITAL MEDIUM ... JUST FORGET THE VINYL ... Thank You Love Marvin Gaye And God ... Thank You Very Much oh Elvis says Thank You also... Would you like some more opioids ELV ... Get the Coke soda for Marvin ah you know Party in the summertime... Put that baby out ... No budget issues necessary it was made by God .. Half a billion no problem there's no money in Heaven ..

I want a Kevin Gray , not a Curve Pusher . Fraud !!!!
Similar thing happened with the European and US pressing of the 2 x 45 Fleetwood Mac - Rumours a few years ago .

Just received a message from a online record store in Sweden that Universal stopped the sales of this European pressing due to issues.

I ordered my copy on 2021-11-04 at HHV, Berlin. Exactly half a year after ordering, I finally received it on 2022-05-04. However, there seems to be an issue, as HHV just emailed me one day later:

(start email)

Hello,
we have been made aware of unfortunate circumstances. The pressing of “What’s Going On” that you ordered at HHV.de was announced as remastered by Kevin Gray, but is in fact mastered by Lawrence Dunster. The sticker says Kevin Gray, but this is indeed wrong. There is another pressing of the Anniversary edition that seems to be correct. We can not get our hands on that pressing so far. Universal is trying to find a solution right now. We hope to know more soon.
Thank you very much.

(end email)

Just for the record: Mine has the hype sticker but *does not* show a sticker "Made in Czech Republic". WTF. Any ideas?

Shame on Universal. How can a major go wrong at this level. The sound is mediocre and not up to par considering the price paid.

I live in the EU and ordered the US version from Amazon.com - marginally more expensive, but obviously worth the difference if you want the audiophile version of this release.

The hype sticker on the cover of the US edition states "2-LP Pressed on 180g vinyl at Precision" (that refers to Precision record pressing, Burlington, Canada). There is a sticker on the back of my album (US from Amazon) that states "made in the Czech republic") - presumably, but not certainly, indicating that the album was actually pressed and packaged at GZ (I cannot imagine that they imported records from Canada to Europe to package them). While not nearly as misleading at the European release - which seems to replace an AAA KG mastering with a digital sourced alternative - surely they could have NOT applied the hype sticker on the front when applying the "made in Czech republic" sticker on the back.
Did anyone actually obtain a copy that was pressed in Canada, and how would you know?

My copy is incredible. Pitch black silent vinyl after a clean. Beautiful warm analogue sound. The best album of all time. If you can get it while it's in print do. It'll be a $500 record in a few years

Out of my 600+ albums, this is easily top 10 best sounding. It sounds like Marvin and his band are in my lounge trying to start a revolution. I had one of the recent releases for a long time and never really played it much because it didn't really sound too great. I figured that's just how it was, but then I read about how much better this 80s pressing was and decided to take a chance by spending a decent amount for an excellent copy. So worth it. It is multitudes better, and I will now have it on regular rotation. May have to get another copy as backup!
