The Modern Lovers only ever recorded demos and live shows, but the demos were released as albums several years later.
One set of demos, produced by John Cale, were released as the band's "first album", The Modern Lovers, in 1976. The artwork says the recordings are from 1971, but they were actually recorded in 1972.
Another set of demos, produced by Kim Fowley, were released as the band's "second album" (this one), in 1981. The artwork says the recordings were made in 1972, but liner notes on later editions say they're from 1973.

This is a great early pressing that includes I'm Straight on Side A.
I was getting some LPs signed by Jonathan in 1987. When he got to this one he refused to sign, and actually used my pen to cross out 'ORIGINAL' and '1972' from the by-line 'The Original Tapes, Spring 1972'. I have included a picture. The recordings certainly sound more primitive than the official first LP. So make of that what you will...
Does this version actually have the song “I’m straight” pressed on the record or is it just listed on the record label and absent on the vinyl? I noticed it isn’t listed on the sleeve. Edited 4 years agoSo "I'm Straight" is only on the very first edition on Mohawk of this LP, yet the track is listed on the sleeve and label of all releases on Mohawk. So how the f... are you supposed to find the version with the song actually on it?!- Released not in 1996 but 1997 as test-pressing is dated 1-3-97
I tried to have Jonathan Richman sign this record after a show. He refused and said it wasn't an official Modern Lovers release.
