For his second album, SHOULDER 2 SHOULDER Envoy retains much of the Detroitian quality of his debut, as one can hear from the graceful "4 Absent Friends," but with "Red Mist," he adds a new influence: straight-up tech-house. It adds a jolt of energy to his work, and the vocals on "Move On" brings a pop sensibility as well. Meanwhile, "Into the Arena" brings a deeper growl to the proceedings, before the title track brightens everything up. "Intervals" introduces some electro into the mix, with "U Can Go" putting a Green Velvet-like house spin on it. "Stargazer" goes dreamier and smoother, but "Is This..." mostly brings us back down to earth, and "Full Time" closes things out with more solid tech-house. An album that can stand shoulder-to-shoulder with the best.
