Notes
"No Other" is the fourth solo studio album by American singer-songwriter Gene Clark. Released in September 1974, it was largely ignored or lambasted by critics and was a commercial failure; the studio time and cost were seen as excessive and indulgent. The record label, Asylum Records, did not promote the album, and by 1976 had deleted it from their catalog. Clark never recovered from the failure of the album.
In the early 2000s, "No Other" was reissued in its entirety to positive critical reappraisal; publications have referred to it as "a lost masterpiece" and "one of the greatest albums ever made." A newly remastered reissue campaign by 4AD was launched in November 2019, with the album reissued across a multitude of formats; the reissue was met with further critical acclaim.
Singles released:
•No Other, January 1975

One of the best sounding records in my collection. Nice pressing- This is a FINE CD and certainly rivals my LP in all aspects. Just as good I'd say
HK 730, Denon DCD1600NE, Linton Wharfedale's - Edited one month agoCrikey! This is a great pressing, and I wasn't expecting that. Here's the versions I've heard / owned:
1974 vintage US pressing. The best-sounding one, but my copy had lots of groove wear and ultimately I sold it because the delicate nature of the music was ruined by the noise.
1989 Edsel pressing. Edsel has some homerun pressings of classic albums—lots of them are Porky prime cuts—but their pressing of No Other was an absolute dud. Very thin sounding.
2019 4AD pressing. It's pretty good, and since I got rid of my 1974 version it was my go-to. However, I always knew something was lacking with the 4AD. It's muddy and mushy-sounding on my system, which dulls the cosmic impact of the music.
And now ... this MOV version. This MOV is closest sound-wise to those vintage 1974 cuts. There's more presence and clarity with the MOV than with the 4AD. I'm seriously stoked to have an improved No Other in this MOV pressing.
Until I find a clean copy of the 1974, at a decent price (tall order I know). But I'm a freak about this record, so I gotta keep chasing the sound.
In the meantime, damn this MOV version sounds good. I highly recommend it over the 4AD. - This album is truly remarkable. On the heels of White Light (another truly remarkable album) Gene made his mark, no matter what the critics said. I love this album.

Former Byrd Gene Clark emerged as a brilliant countrified songwriter with the wonderfully laid back “White Light” album in 1971, but this 1974 album completely defied any expectations. The country swing is still happening, such as on the lovely opener ‘Life’s Greatest Fool’ and the country-psych of ‘From a Silver Phial’, but Gene sings in a hung-over drawl while the band choogles away in a delicious high haze and the massed gospel backing singers drive the songs home.
The entire album is sublime as a whole, but the real standouts include the amazing ‘Silver Raven’: all moody acoustic picking, ghostly slide guitar, tumbleweed drumming and Gene’s soulfully wracked vocal while ‘Strength Of Strings’ is a powerful, swirling mélange of cosmic vocals, lyrical bass, tumbling pianos and peals of fizzy guitar.
Gene stretches out on the title track which is a funky swamp-fuzz psych-out full of vamping organs, scorching guitar breaks and percussive breakdowns with a distorted, mournful vocal and ‘Some Misunderstanding’ is a slow-burning masterpiece with simmering synth backing and a mournful country-gospel vibe.
This album was supposed to be Gene’s defining statement with its lush arrangements, expansive contemplative songs and huge, clean production. At the time it really didn’t go down well and more-or-less sank as an expensive folly. These days it is one of those great albums that is finally being reappraised as classic buried treasure rescued from the mid 70’s LA cocaine blizzard!referencing No Other (LP, Album, Promo, CP) 7E-1016
A cosmic country top 25 lp right here. No one knew it at the time but they all do nowreferencing No Other (LP, Album, Stereo) SYL 9020
What a fabulous pressing! I managed to find a NM copy of this one (that didn't completely break the bank...). Plays beautifully. Certainly one of the best records of the 70s.referencing No Other (LP, Album, Reissue) 4M200
Not hearing any hiss that's not related to the actual source material. If there's tape hiss present, it is no doubt related to the original masters, not the pressing quality. The label is famous for using shitty source material. I agree the 4MWB is def hit and miss in QC department. Some of my records from them sound like records-->CD-->records. Lot's of inner groove distortion.- I have the recent box set edition of this, which is excellent. The sound quality on the original is much better than the 4AD vinyl, there.is better separation and the drums have much more punch, everything just sounds lusher and with No Other that is kind of the key to this album. I was hesitant because the 4AD sounded OK but if you like this album this is the one you need, recommended.
Audio note amp and speakers.
Nottingham Analogue Turntable - Edited one year agoI always liked this release soundwise. I recently bought a NM original with both the intention of comparing but also to be able to give away this MOV to a friend who needs to understand the greatness of this piece of music. In my opinion I have to say they are close (using good headphones). Maybe the OG is "a little bit up in your face" and the MOV slightly "muddier" and a tiny bit more bass. But thats when Im forced to really try to come upp with some kind of difference. This MOV is all you need really for much less money than an OG.
