Notes
"Jeanie, Jeanie, Jeanie" is often miscredited as having been written by Mike Chapman, who recorded a song of the same name with his band Tangerine Peel. However, Chapman's "Jeanie, Jeanie, Jeanie" is a completely different song from the one the Stray Cats recorded; they just happen to share the same title. The Stray Cats' "Jeanie, Jeanie, Jeanie" was originally performed by Eddie Cochran, and was written by George Motola and Ricky Page

This album sounds incredible! Hell of a debut album! Incredible that this New York Band was signed in Europe two years before the U.S. took notice.referencing Stray Cats (LP, Album, Test Pressing) none

Felt I should make comment about this one as it features the track Ubangi Stomp which is my handle but mine really refers to the original Warren Smith version on Sun, one of the greatest rock n roll tracks ever also covered by Jerry Lee.
As for the Stray Cats first LP it also contains the track Rumble In Brighton. Going to concerts at this time was always a bit hairy as inevitably their would be outbreaks of fights and this gig at the Brighton Top Rank was no different as you still had Punks and of course the local Teds and Rockabilly kids who decided this was a good time to beat the crap out of each other. Certainly added excitement to gigs.
The Stray Cats were brilliant by the way.referencing Stray Cats (LP, Album) STRAY 1
This album was released under the Arista label in 1981 to the UK. It managed to reach no. 6 on the UK album charts, and both ‘Rock This Town’ and ‘Runaway Boys’ saw 9th position in the UK Top 40. The Stray Cats were a trio of young Rockabilly cats who grew up in New York during the heydays of Punk. Whilst digging through their parents record collections, they stumbled upon artists such as Vincent, Cochran and Burnette. Within this album they covered songs by both Vincent (Double Talkin’ Baby), and Cochran (Jeanie, Jeanie, Jeanie). This album is kicked off by the pre-released single ‘Runaway Boys’ that helps to immediately show you exactly what these three young cats are all about. ‘Storm the Embassy’ is the only real political track within this album. It comments on the Iranian crisis and American hostages in the late 1970s. Setzer had played this track with his previous band ‘The Bloodless Pharaohs’ under the name ‘Boys Having Babies’ and with different lyrics. The B Side kicks off with potentially the best song on the album ‘Rumble in Brighton’. The origins of ‘Stray Cat Strut’, their signature song, are still up for debate. Using the chord progression from Ray Charles’ ‘Hit the Road Jack’, it is also believed that inspiration came from Richard Hall and his well-known single ‘Blank Generation’. As Hall would often have Setzer’s previous band ‘The Blood Pharaohs’ as support act, it is very plausible that this song draws inspiration from Hall. The cover of Vincent’s ‘Double Talkin’ Baby’ is a stand out track for me, I feel that all members of the trio area able to show off and that they all play a key part in making this song what it is. The last track is a cover of Montrell’s ‘Mellow Saxophone’, being renamed ‘Wild Saxophone’ and seeing Gary Barnacle on sax, playing over Slim Jim’s impeccable beat. This is a great album that I would recommend to absolutely anyone, and that I am proud to own an original copy of.- The best version of this album to date IMHO - I had the original UK Arista CD and it was terrible with a very poor sound, and a number of audible drop outs. This version from Japan is perfect, with HQ audio and great packaging - buy with confidence!
