- Edited 2 years agoFantastic album, sad and raw as it should be. Got the black version and i’m glad because the green edition has some issues. Why MOV makes such awful inserts is beyond me; i have bought a lot of reissues from them and while most have a good sound, sometimes they just cut songs in a weird way (like “Coma” from STP’s Shangri La), press half the booklet (like Prong’s Rude Awakening) or just do a horrible reproduction of the CD insert like this album. I just threw it to the garbage, you can’t read the lyrics and it just feels wrong. There’s always some kind of mediocrity expected from their pressings, they could be awesome but they conform being a middle of the road label.
- Odd to hear Jerry speak of Comes With The Fall and playing with William Duvall at the time the opening in itself sounds a bit weird I found a physical copy of this album 3 years ago amongst other rarities of AIC and the side projects I wouldn't want to have to start collecting from scratch again though rough this is certainly something to have in ones collection regardless
- I thought I had the green due to the gold MOV label. I was surprised to see that is was black. After closer inspection the Gold label states nothing about limitations or color. Also, there isn't a number on the back of the gatefold. After reading the reviews on the green, I had to listen to it right away. It sounds fantastic. So grab the black if your looking to get this for sure.
- I was a bit hesitant to grab this on vinyl due to some negative reviews on the colored version, but went ahead and picked up this black vinyl version to try.
I'm happy to report it sounds nice on my system. The records are both flat, quiet and clean from the pressing plant. The packaging is beautiful as well, with a quality gatefold sleeve and insert.
MoV does it again - a great addition to my collection. No experience w/the green version, but buy this one with confidence. - For what it's worth, the black vinyl version of this pressing sounds WAY better, due to some kind of mastering/flanging error with the transparent green pressings, causing distortion to the sound quality. This has happened before when MOV tries to branch out into the gimmicky colored vinyl craze.
The black variant, while still sounding like a high-res CD pressed to vinyl, sounds much better. At least the packaging is beautiful.. - Just received this today. I loved it upon original release. Slightly disappointed this is the single version but the full deal is so long.
Record jacket is matte and print quality is great. Gatefold with some nice art. A+ on visuals and packaging.
Vinyl looks good and is quiet with very little noise.
Played it at regular volume and sounded good. However when I cranked the volume sound deteriorated. So compression of dynamics is at play. Original CD is also crushed too.
Overall taking everything into account I am satisfied with the release. Should of had an all new master for vinyl for the price. - Edited 7 years agoThis is the first time album from Jerry Cantrell's solo career has been released on vinyl. This one comes about 15 years after the original CD release. Fans will know this was a controversial release from the moment it came out. This is not the complete collection. Later released on CD as Volumes 1 & 2, MOV has opted to go with the truncated 14 tracks that matches the original CD release. This certainly is an incomplete version of the artists vision for the project, but it's not an incomplete version of the release. This is a faithful match to the original, single CD, release. Obviously fans would prefer the 25 track version. Perhaps MOV will release a 4-vinyl version of Volumes 1 & 2 in the future.
The audio quality is OK, not great or amazing. I do agree with the previous comments, by user eric91478, that the CD is more dynamic. This album was only ever mastered for CD. It was originally recorded or mastered for vinyl. Some elements have been lost in the CD-quality-source-material in this vinyl release (mainly backing tracks during the versus). A pity. A shame. The sound is, as you'd expect from vinyl, warmer. It's not as dynamic. It lacks fidelity at both ends of the spectrum and the middle is muted at times. MOV does accurately state on the front sticker, "180 gram audiophile vinyl." That, however, does not mean this is an audiophile-quality release. Don't be fooled by marketing phrases.
MOV has put this out with an initial run of 1500 copies in translucent green coloured vinyl. The limited run is individually numbered on the back of the gatefold cover.
As a fan, I was going to buy this regardless. Casual fans should wait and hope for a release of the complete vision of this project - the 25 track Volumes 1 & 2 set. I can't fault MOV for this release. It is what it is. They never claimed it was anything other than the original release of Degradation Trip (14 tracks). They've never called this the definitive release. They never claimed it to be remastered for vinyl. This release is exactly what it is. That said, it could have been a whole lot more and considering the hefty price tag that comes along with MOV releases, the average listener to Cantrell's music should keep all of this in mind. - This was advertised as "transparent green" vinyl. Oddly, the first record is opaque green, and the second is transparent green. Does anyone else have the same curiosity going on with theirs?
- While I was absolutely stoked to get this on vinyl for the first time, this pressing leaves me pretty disappointed. My personal experience with MOV has been mostly positive, but this release makes me very skeptical going forward. The sound quality is below average and truth be told, the CD sounds better. While the fidelity isn't awful, it's not very good either.
