Reviews
- Edited 2 months agoIn my NEW quest of reviews, for some reason I am in the mood to review those Compilations and Box Sets that are WORTHY of it...There are only 2 by "The Greatest Vocal Group Of All Time", and "The Temptations – Emperors Of Soul" is one of them!!!!!
Now, I had both the 5 "Cassette" and 5 "CD" sets....Again, as ALWAYS, WIRED DIFFERENTLY!!!!
"Streetmouse" HIT this on the HEAD!!!!! This is one of the MOST complete put together Collections ever put out!!!!! This came out at a time in the '90's when Record Companies FINALLY got SMART in putting Collections together...In my opinion, it took them LONG ENOUGH!!!!!
What I like about this Collection in particular is, instead of starting where they usually start with "The Temps" first HIT, "The Way You Do The Things You Do", they started from the start of the groups Career....And I mean the VERY START, like with the "Otis Williams & The Distants" joint, "Come One"...Then it goes with the first installment of "The Temps" ("Otis Williams", "Melvin Franklin", "Eddie Kendricks", "Paul Williams" and "Elbridge "Al" Bryant", who was gone by 1963) with songs like, "Oh, Mother Of Mine", "Paradise" and "Dream Come True"....
Then the HITS started coming with the addition of the ONE and ONLY "Mr. David Ruffin"!!!! But even then it still had the "Edddie Kendricks" led "The Way You Do The Things You Do", "I'll Be In Trouble" and "The Girl's Alright With Me"...."David's" influence REALLY came in, when "Smokey Robinson" gave him his Theme song, in the form of the MASSIVE Classic, and HUMMUNGEST #1 HIT, "My Girl"!!!!!!
After that, the gloves CAME OFF on this Collection with the ULTIMATE CLASSICS like, "Get Ready", "Beauty Is Only Skin Deep", "(I Know) I'm Losing You", "I Wish It Would Rain" and the ULTIMATE "Eddie"/"David" Collaboration "You're My Everything".....
Unfortunately for "David" (in him causing trouble), he was fired from the group....That's when the group got an AMAZING replacement in "Dennis Edwards"!!!!! With that, MY FAVORITE ERA of "The Temps" started with the "Norman Whitfield" led, "Psychedelic Soul" era with the DOCUMENTARIES, "Cloud Nine", "Runaway Child, Running Wild", "Don't Let The Joneses Get You Down" and "Ball Of Confusion (That's What The World Is Today)"...In between these FANTASTIC joints you will find the GOOGUNGEST #1 HITS, "I Can't Get Next To You" and in my opinion, the BEST "Temptation" song EVER, "Just My Imagination (Running Away With Me)"....
Even though "Eddie Kendricks" and "Paul Williams" were no longer with the group after that (with "Paul" unfortunately Passing Away), the Collection continues to SHINE with joints like, "Superstar (Remember How You Got Where You Are)", "Masterpiece" and the MASTERFUL #1 HIT, "Papa Was A Rollin' Stone"....
"Norman Whitfield" may have thrown a monkey wrench in the works by leaving "Motown" but the next few years of material was still married with highlights like, "Shaky Ground", "Power", and "Standing On The Top, Part 1", Produced and featuring "Mr. Punk Funk" himself "Rick James"...."Norman" even came back to Produce the Classic, "Sail Away"....
After "Dennis" left for a Solo Career, the group recruited an OUTSTANDING Singer in "Ali-Ollie Woodson"....With that, this Collection is BLESSED with more HITS in the form of "Treat Her Like A Lady" and "Lady Soul"...Then the Collection ends with some '90's joints in the form of "Hoops Of Fire" and the ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC THOUGHT PROVOKING "Error Of Our Ways".....
It is also somber to think that in the mist of putting this Collection together, the MOST BELOVED "Temptation" of ALL, "Melvin", Passed Away....It is just a reminder how having ALL of these Classics and their counterparts together could REALLY SATISFY, even the most casual "Temp" fan....
Well, I know this was LENGTHY, but I REALLY wanted to make sure that I PURELY covered as much as I could...Like I asked before, could You Guys imagine this MASTERFUL Collection being on VINYL?????? BOY, I WISHED IT WAS!!!!!!!! - When it comes to anthologies and greatest hits collections, there’s not a person walking the planet who doesn’t think they, including me, could do a better job at compiling essential hit material, with most anthologies not actually being complete anthologies. Greatest hits are subjective, and there are around 85 of those gems out there regarding the music and times of The Temptations. Anthologies on the other hand are considered to be a huge body of work by an artist or band, though that concept is still subjective and far from complete.
With The Temptations being chart topping hit masters, and a band who’ve been at the pinnacle of their trade for nearly fifty years, certainly greatest hits collections are easy to achieve, though Emperors Of Soul is the only comprehensive anthology out there, beginning at the beginning with The Distance, The Pirates, through the various incarnations of The Temps, along with their hit material duets, mono versions and some live numbers. That being said, The Temps laid down twenty-nine formal albums, albums that for the most part were built around one or two good songs, then laced with rather forgettable uninspired material, making the concept of a true anthology, a collection of ‘all’ their material, album by album, simply impossible for a boxed set.
Hence, we have this five disc collection, one that’s been delivered in a stunning purple long-box (with the long-box being something I dislike as they’re impossible to store alphabetically, not easy to use, with the books being easily damaged and not easily read, as one seems to be reading them while looking around a corner in order that they not get bent) befitting the band, contains 110 essential tracks, making this the most definitive collection on the market today.
What’s lacking are their covers of other people’s material, such as that of The Beatles. Though what’s sincerely absent for me is the aspect that none of the material has been remastered, tweaked or brought up to date using the current technology available, with that being something I would love to hear. Of course no one is going to sit down and remaster all of twenty-nine formal releases (well, perhaps someone would), though the singles, now that is a doable achievement, with the singles being what nearly all fans wish, and a project that’s not that far out of the realm of possibility.
As good and complete as this collection is, I still managed to trim it down to twenty-two songs that ride best in my back pocket, songs that have swirled in my head for it seems forever. Frankly, there is much material here, especially from the mid 70’s forward that bespeaks of later incarnations of The Temps, along with material that’s just too sappy for my ears as they aged and were less able to find their way into my soul, material that lacks youthful exuberance and lusciousness from a time when it was all about the smile and not a job some thirty or more years into their career.
So yes, at this moment in time, Emperors Of Soul is the definitive collection, the one you should be availing yourself of if you’re a fan or at all interested in the music and times of The Temptations, where you can secure the material that floats best though your ears, letting the rest drift off for someone else to capture.
What would I have wished for? If I had my druthers, I would have assembled a relentless collection of the essential singles only, have had those fully remastered, and all packaged in a quad-box with a smaller booklet. Until that day, I’ll keep this purple gem close at hand.
