I think this is probably my favorite Tim Buckley album.

Truth be told, however, I don't think he really ever did a *great* album. He's a confounding artist whose musical journeys always throw me plenty of sharp turns --and sometimes dead ends.

My current thinking is that I simply can't judge him like I do other artists --I just have to get on board for a while, and put my trust in where he takes me.

And something about his music always draws me back again, and when it does, Blue Afternoon is a great place to hop back on.

'Happy Time' is among Buckley's best songs, upbeat and joyous. He almost sounds like he's pulling the lyric out of the ether as he's singing it. 'Blue Melody' and 'The River' are dark, epic and haunting... The vibraphone solo on the latter track is terrific.

The sparse arrangements --guitar. bass, vibes and minimal purcussion give all the songs here a gloomy beauty. The band sounds comfortable and plays with just the right dreamy intensity throughout.

The closer is 'The Train,' a jazz jam that features Buckley screaming, scatting and howling right along with his great band. When the song shudders to a stop after almost eight minutes, it's hard to know for sure where I've been, but the compelling and erratic Tim Buckley draws me in for the return trip every time.

Why are all the earliest dates for this LP 1970, when on the label on my copy it is clearly 1969 ?

This is a highly underrated Tim Buckley gem. 12-string-guitar, jazzy guitar, psychedelic, dark atmosphere. Everybody who is into Tims Music should try to get a hold of this, put it on the LP-player that night and listen to the whole thing. It's on its way of becoming my TB-favorite.
