Notes
John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band is the debut studio album by English rock musician John Lennon. It was released in 1970, after Lennon had issued three experimental albums with Yoko Ono and Live Peace in Toronto 1969, a live performance in Toronto credited to the Plastic Ono Band. The album was recorded simultaneously with Ono's debut avant garde solo album, Yoko Ono/Plastic Ono Band, at Ascot Sound Studios and Abbey Road Studios using the same musicians and production team and nearly identical cover artwork.
John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band is generally considered one of Lennon's finest solo albums, documenting with honesty and artistic integrity his emotional and mental state at that point in his career. In 1987, Rolling Stone magazine ranked it fourth in its list "The 100 Best Albums of the Last Twenty Years" and in 2012, ranked it number 23 in "The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time".

- Edited 6 days agoI hunted down and bought a copy of this pressing on the Apple/Fame label. I compared it to an original US pressing and the reissued version from a few years ago. Definitely worth getting. It was cut by Harry Moss - the same guy that did almost all the Beatles albums. You won't get the internal artwork with the lyrics, though, but the improved sound quality will be worth the trade.
- This release sounds quite good. It doesn't have the low end that you would find on a more modern pressing, but there's clarity, separation and it's quite "fun" to listen to. Not a bad version to pick up, if you get the chance!
- I can’t believe how good this is! The music practically barks and jumps out of the speakers at you! The shimmer of the drums sound like the kit is being played in the room with you. The detailing is unreal.
- My copy is fantastic. No egregious noise, and the remix is the best I have heard this album. Nice packaging too. Well done!
- like the Beatles sets this is more something for real fans that want absolutely everything. for someone looking only for the main album there is the very good mastered Japanese CD (TOCP-70391) with a good Dynamic Range. or the Japanese SACD that is pretty expensive these days.
anyways this set offers a amazing amount of outtakes, bonus tracks, different versions.. the book is very well done.
the bluray mastering for the surround tracks is the best so far. highly recommended, even if you end up ripping the blurays to play them in stereo :) the dynamic range of the surround tracks beats everything else that's available on CD, Stereo Bluray tracks, stereo high res tracks on Qobuz, hdtracks etc.
and you can still pick this set up used for 80-100 bucks on Discogs. - This UK pressing was hard to find, but really is a cut above the two US pressings I've heard (original and 1978 purple label). The bass on this HTM cut is like a living, blood-pumping thing. Lennon's voice sounds closer and more defined. If I'd only ever heard the US vinyl, I'd have never known. Quiet vinyl, too.
- It is necessary to clean or wash the records before listening.
This album contain numerous skips.
No clicks or other recording defects were detected.
The records are clean sound, provided you get rid of the skips. A regular antistatic brush helped me. - Edited 7 months agoI first heard the 2000 remix via CD borrowed from my local library when I was a youth. It was my first solo Lennon listening and it really blew me away. Both the songs and clarity of the mix. I didn't even know it was a remix until I heard the original mix remastered years later. Perhaps I am biased because of my first listen but I really feel the original is lacking something by comparison. I went back to the remix and could hear it just carries much more emotion for me, everything sounds closer and more intimate. I assert that Yoko helped bring out something that was in the sessions but not the original release.
Anyway fast forward to my adult years and I was surprised that MFSL pressed this remix and not the original, surely just because of timing and that was the most recent remaster then. This became my first "audiophile" disc and I feel it's done justice to my emotional experience. Even if I never listen to the bonus tracks who cares about the altered sequencing when it sounds this good. This is the one to own IMO. - Just bought me a mint copy and the sound as always from MoFI sounds incredible dead quiet and warm. A definitely must in every Beatle collection.
