For blues guitarists, the grossly underrated Mike Bloomfield is one of our patron saints. This is a propitious gathering of Bloomfield and Al Kooper for a blues jam session in '68. According to the liner notes, Bloomfield left town the next morning and Kooper had to find another guitarist to fill Side B. Steven Stills to the rescue. So, what we have here are two half records in one release.

Bloomfield's Les Paul tone is very trebly. The opening lick of Albert's shuffle is quite exciting, as you immediately know what you're in for. This record is not quite up to par with Mayall's 'Beano' record (with Clapton) with tighter arrangements and spectacular ensemble playing. If you're looking for more of that, you will not find it here.

Side B sounds completely different, infusing elements of folk and psychedelic rock, a la CSN, Cream, Hendrix. Agree with others that "Season of the Witch" is the highlight on the album. With the huge horn arrangement, it resembles a Creed Taylor (CTI) release from this era.

Recording is not great, some out of tune guitar, clipping issues, and an uninspired mix with insufficient low end. Nevertheless, the point of the record is a meeting of like-minded friends to hang out and play through some blue standards. Mission accomplished.

3 stars here. Recommended.

Great pressing of Super Session everything is very dynamic and a wide sound stage. That first guitar lick from Albert's Shuffle lets you know how great Bloomfield was and how nice is can sound on vinyl.

I have the 1A /1A Pitman pressing.
The recording level is quite low, my copy looks NM, but the vinyl is noisy.....too bad. Without the surface noise, it would be a great listen.
My system: Nagaoka MP-200
MoFi Studiodeck + SSC Recordpoint 420
Atlas Equator Integra for phono cable
Home engineered tube phono pre-amp+power amp
Unitra-Tonsil ZG 40C speakers (mid speakers changed for Monacor MSH-115)

Nice and affordable reissue. Don't know the original pressing, but this sounds more than decent.

My copy (SONP 50058) has different labels, with A 3 - B 4 matrices ; maybe a 1969 (Re)- press ??

I really can't believe how cheap this album is -- it sounds wonderful. For $15, it's a wonderful value buy.

The Quadraphonic version has different takes and/or mixes than the stereo version.
