How far can you take the ironic cool self help lyrics over electronic beats genre? One and half hit songs and an album presumably. It's a good album though, production wise ahead of its time, great arrangements and composition. Some heavy hitters were on board for this. It may be the greatest novelty record of our times.

        The whole thing is amazing.
And the dub of 'Adventures In Success' is beyond cool.
Probably 'coz it sold so few copies originally.
Tell me when you spot who is singing on 'Opportunity'.
        The videos ?
Professor Mause and the real Will Powers were old friends.
        I'm sure they came later.

This record is the perfect match between Laurie Anderson, Talking Heads/Tom Tom Club and Grace Jones. Innovative, funky, experimental at times, the quirkiness of the music mixed over the spoken words is just legendary. Make sure to listen to the whole album (and not just "Adventures In Success"), you're in for a great, great treat !

Will Powers worked well when he was unknown.
This girl parading about as 'him', he was never happy about.
I suspect the out-takes from this project could be jolly interesting.
But since it barely limped out on CD briefly I doubt anyone label-side is that interested.
Adventures In Success is a clever bit of fun in a cool NY dubby sorta way and the sleeper hit that never was.
Happy Birthday is amazing too, "Yes, you ARE Dying !"
It's a bit Tina Weymouth and probably IS with the famous names roll-call on here.
              U would wanna hear the out-takes, I do !

Will Powers was the stage name used by celebrity photographer, Lynn Goldsmith, when she created a self-help comedy music album. The 1983 album, entitled Dancing for Mental Health, used affirmations set to music to poke fun at the self-help entrepreneurs who "build the listener's inner self and encourage personal growth through the thought that anything is possible". Will Powers is portrayed by Goldsmith during the spoken word sections as well as in the sung sections, her voice shifted downward in pitch to sound male. Key musical collaborators were Jacob Brackman and Steve Winwood. Additional contributors to the recording included Sting, Nile Rodgers, Todd Rundgren, Carly Simon and Tom Bailey. The album Dancing For Mental Health produced two hit singles, "Kissing With Confidence" and "Smile".

I use this album all the time for mental health reasons. It wakes annoying neighbours and I throw it their cats. played backwards and forwards I find it has stretched the time space continuum and I am now master of my own worm portal to another universe where I live in rainbows.
