- The track listing on this release is the same as the 90s compilation True People - The Detroit Techno Album...

Have to agree with memepool below, on release, this was a disappointing offering, and it's telling, that at the time, the only thing that stood out, in terms of sounding fresh for 96, was the Juan Atkins/4 Hero track, it was a pretty average compilation in terms of overall quality, but keep this in context, Detroit techno was a decade old when this appeared, a lot of people were expecting it to raise the bar, instead, it sounded dated. Having said that, it's not really that bad at all now: 86, 96, 06, 2016, much of a muchness these days.- Edited 8 years ago

Useless fact: The titles of Eddies tracks are the initials and birth years of his two sisters.
I seem to remember reading in a music mag back when this came out that it wasn't overly well received & something along the lines of Eddie deliberately choosing relatively "boring" minimal tracks from the bigger names of Detroit as well as including not one but two of his own tracks (which are both dope by the way) which probably didn't help this rumour neither.
I love Eddies music but I remember him being slightly prickly at the time depending on what mood he was in and he was fairly demanding on the poor bastard who was unlucky enough to be his assistant during a tour.
But his music to me beat a lot of the bigger Detroit heads for turning out dope tracks with more consistency.
That said there is a heap of great tracks from some of the lesser known locals that are worth getting this comp for. referencing True People: The Detroit Techno Album. (5×12", Limited Edition, Box Set, Album, Compilation) REACTLP71.
Full of amazing tunes... Wiggin', 8th Wonder and Zephyr in particular are unbelievably good! Blew my mind back in the day, and have aged pretty well, tooreferencing True People: The Detroit Techno Album. (5×12", Limited Edition, Box Set, Album, Compilation) REACTLP71.
This sounds much better now than it did then.
I mean,, compared with the records that were coming out in the run-up to this comp (Humana, Model 500, Dan Bell and 7th City) I was a bit disappointed. I bought it anyway because of the Drexiciya, Claude Young and Surburban Knight tracks.
Coming back to it now the KT-19941, Shake and Eddie Folks tracks shout DETROIT in my face. It's a great comp of mellower, more emotional techno. Vote 'Like'.- I beg to differ. If I was stuck on an island and I had to choose only one Detroit collection this would be the one.
The sound is really deep and sometimes introvert but never over the line - Always with focus and direction. Of course Drexciyas, Claude Young and the rest have contributed with amazingly beautiful tracks but Kevin Saunderson sums it up with the the sample "on the move!"

There really is no other way to say this, than to just say it.
Davey Jones Locker makes this ESSENTIAL. I've actually gone through three boxes shoving them in and out of record boxes over the years, seriously. Drexciya knocked it out of the actual breathable atmosphere with this one, and straight down to the bottom of the Atlantic freaking Ocean. Far deeper than the experts can fathom, let alone visit without suffocating.
You wanna make a statement at the start of your set that says to the gathered crowd, You'll all soon be lying on the dance floor, annihilated. Then you play them this Drexciyan Sea Bomb. Guaranteed to get them all, eventually. Eventually everyone gets bit and switches to Drexciyan time when submerged underwater with this sonic sea-monster for long enough.
Add to this Shakir's planet patrolling pirate ship. 365 Blacks blame games. Eddies two gorgeous ladies. Kevin's dance floor killer. 4Heros amazing fortune and Blake's emotional bombshell, this really is very nearly perfect, but mainly it really is thanks to Drexciya's Darthouven dynamite-fishing sea shanty that this must be hooked onto and reeled in, boatloads of fun for the whole family. And if Eddie hadn't forgotten Carl, Mike's, Jeff & Rob's contact details during the compiling stage of this compilation, we would have got the whole family and I would have bought many more copies and given them to the frightened and crying people not dancing next to me on the dance floor when Davey Jones Locker is dropped. For God's sake, start grooving like a Drexciyan with a plankton problem, or I will ditch your lifeless dancefloor-occupying carcass overboard to face the big-wave wrath of the Wavejumper Battalions alone without life-preservers.
Sink or Swim, the choice is yours.

This came out at the peak of Techno's popularity in the UK and at that time was thought to be a fairly week cash-in compilation by React who were usually more into Nu-NRG / Hardhouse.
Looks impressive enough on the strength of who is on the track listing but the tracks aren't their best on the whole so it wouldn't be top of my list.
There are far more seminal compilations out there if you want a snapshot check Techno The New Dance Sound of Detroit on 10 Records, Retro Techno : Detroit Definitive on Network, Relics on Buzz...
