Surf's Up is the 17th studio album by American rock band the Beach Boys, released in 1971. It was met with a warm critical reception and reached number 29 on the US record charts, becoming their best-performing album in their home country since 1967. In the UK, the album peaked at number 15, continuing a string of chart successes that had not abated since 1965.
Both the album's title and cover artwork are an ironic, self-aware nod to the departure from the band's surf rock roots. Its name was taken from the song of the same title written by Brian Wilson and Van Dyke Parks five years earlier for the abandoned studio album Smile. The creative direction of Surf's Up was largely influenced by newly employed band manager Jack Rieley, who strove to reinvent the group's image and reintroduce them to the era's counterculture. Two singles were issued in the US: "Long Promised Road" and "Surf's Up." Only the former charted, peaking at number 89.
In 2004, the album was voted 154 in a German edition of Rolling Stone's "The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time" and ranked 61 on Pitchfork Media's "The Top 100 Albums Of The 1970s." It is listed in the music reference book 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die.

- My copy of this is problematic as others have described. Annoying non-fill throughout, the highs sound very harsh, and it’s quite noisy even after a vacuum clean.
- Can someone comment on the sound of this pressing? I see an artisan logo and 1A’s which usually are good signs.
- Seems to me this should be listed as UK rather than Europe. “Made in Gt. Britain” on labels, “Printed in UK” on barcode, no reference to Europe or EU anywhere.
- Ditto what I wrote for The Beach Boys - Sunflower. Still sounds like the 1991 CD, still looks like a crummy scan of the artwork. This time however, the lyrics were printed on the back of the sleeve instead of an insert, and the tiny text size combined with poor print resolution & it being layered on a grainy sand texture makes it a dyslexic's nightmare to try and read.

TERRIBLE PRESSING! If you're looking for a high quality presentation of the album, this is not it. The channels are flipped, there is a low-pass filter on the whole record, and perhaps worst of all, it's filtered through some sort of "noise reduction"(?) that fades quieter parts down & fades it back up during louder parts. This ruins the piano part of the title track almost completely, to the point that it's comical to listen to. A Caribou label Surf's Up is a fun novelty for sure, but don't let it be unknown how crummy it sounds.referencing Surf's Up (LP, Album) RS 6453
This beats my 2009 pressing I already owned, which already sounded great itself. Full, clear, dynamic audio, way better than the mastering from the 2009 pressing. I can actually hear the lyrics in A Day In the Life of a Tree now! One of the best BB albums- This is a winner for sure!
Amazing sounding analogue pressing, with beautiful textured Sleeve (just as the UK original)
Only minus...well, there's no insert. - anyone who says this does not sound fantastic should be horsewhipped!!!!! lol jk but this is a outstanding sounding press

Strange album. Very ahead of its time with songs about the environment and student protests. I snagged a near mint copy that sounds great. Yes, as someone else said its a bit trebly but my amp sorts that out. Turn up loud and its a good sounding record. Nice textured sleeve + lyric insert.
Favourite tracks - Long Promised Road, Disney Girls, Feel Flows, and the last three songs which are epic. I love the primitive Moog burbles that appear throughout. Good stuffreferencing Surf's Up (LP, Album) RS 6453
I love this record. One of their later more rock non-beachy era records. It's so weird and delightful.
