I sincerely had high hopes for both The Beach Boys and the album Wild Honey, with rumors that the band would be back on track, back on Capital Records, and playing their own instruments again without the necessity of supersession backup musicians. Of course there were on again off again rumors regarding Brian Wilson, but no one really though that he’d be the mastermind behind this outing.

It’s easy to, though it’s important not to dismiss the innovations of the Beach Boys, both stylistically, and the major fact that they were nearly single handedly responsible for creating music about young people and for young people, about their issues dreams aspirations and ideals. While certainly overshadowed at this stage by the likes of The Beatles, the group was still capable of creating some interesting and finely passioned music. Yet with brilliant seductive songs such as “Wild Honey” and “Darlin’,” even though it was as song that was re-written from a number laid down nearly a dozen years prior, and recorded first by Sharon Marie, the album felt as if it had laid out on the beach too long, a bit bleached from the sun, with the final results seeming much thinner, less complex, resulting in music that was filled with the expected harmonies that didn’t sound as vibrant and sincere, yet was much more quiet, in a pleasant fashion, with nearly nothing to get listeners up and moving.

Without considering the nature of their opus Smile today, at the time Smile was a dismal failure, delivering nothing that fans wanted, and certainly not what the members of The Beach Boys, other than Brian Wilson, wanted to sing … so perhaps the Boys were walking on a few eggshells, afraid to be too adventurous, for fear of delivering something that was un-acceptable yet again, with those frustrating fears resulting in something that was pleasing, yet almost totally inessential. Though perhaps it’s important that one should consider that this release wasn’t so much for the public, as it was for the Beach Boys themselves, with an album recorded in the comfort and safety of Brian’s home, with inspirations taken from easy flowing Motown, to sort of get the band reacquainted with themselves as a unit, and personally with each other again.

Wild Honey was extremely well thought out, with what’s good here being brilliantly good. Wild Honey to be the first step for a new direction with layered harmonies and elements of rhythm and blues, yet for some reason The Beach Boys sadly altered this direction nearly as soon as it was begun, as it would have been most interesting to hear how the band would have moved though these musical attitudes in the future, but those dreams would never be realized, leaving Wild Honey to be just what it is, a snapshot in time, with the best material to find its way onto compilation and greatest hits albums.

The fun facts: The image of a stained glass window for the album artwork was indeed an actual stained glass window, one to be found in the in the Bel Air home of Brian and Marilyn Wilson. But don’t go trying to find it, when the house sold, Marilyn took it with her and is currently in her present home.

Wild Honey was the last Beach Boys album to be released in both mono and duophonic [a sound process by which a monaural recording is reprocessed into a kind of "fake stereo" by splitting the signal into two channels, delaying the left and the right channels by means of delay lines and other circuits, desynchronizing the two channels by fractions of a second, and cutting the bass frequencies in one channel with a high-pass filter, then cutting the treble frequencies in the other channel with a low-pass filter. The result was an artificial stereo effect, without giving the listener the true directional sound characteristics of real stereo. This was process nearly owned by Capital Records, and was used by The Beatles also].

The audio/video is not HQ its 100% needless mono!

I remember both the UK singles Wild Honey and Darlin' being in that vile distorted compressed wash of nothing 1ch sound.

once heard in a true and full stereo mix the tracks come alive and you can hear the vocals and the harmonies

(Take a listen to Country Air on the audo! where's the whistling aww way down in the wash!)

Not a 1967 issue, this one should be a late 60s 2nd issue
