...i've given it some thought. I own the original pressing (this one, finally found one in the wild) and also own TVT-4370, ca. 1998. The other day I decided to A/B, so here goes..

I - TVT-4370, 1998
Song: New York City - Gil Scott's voice project's well and the trumpet to the right projects a well defined stage with voice, bass is full and along with it the horn instrument the dominant audible sounds..

II - AL 5001, 1976
Song: New York City - Immediately notice...that there's Congas - crisp with the distinct snap and pop that percussive instrument resonates resting between Lft/Ctr. Gil Scott is GIL SCOTT HERON; there's much more air in his annunciation; sounds like the treble and with it overall volume is turned up a few clicks; tone, inflection differences can be heard and is absolutely clearer. Another difference is the timbre and level of now hearing Reggie Brisbane on the drums (much more crisp), specific hi-hat, kick drum and overall setup now has each, its own signature and its position in the 'stage is much much higher Mid/Rgt of front 'stage. Bass is clearer, more impactful, detailed and decays more musically than the repress. On the repress the drums are more background in comparison; audible but not prominently individual of a complete set of instruments...and then the Saxophone simply becomes - Saxophone..the Piano tones resonate more delicately around the room..I WANTED to keep listening. Amazing the difference.

Essentially, I end up hearing what was lost from 22 years earlier....and there is quite a bit of sonic information that even a layman-casual listener will hear in difference, i will argue, almost immediately. Overall impression is of a fuller, wider, higher and more dynamic representation in general and specifically of each individual instrument - so much so that it's as if one is a Red Ferrari and the other, a Red Fiero. An unfair comparison in the end, but worth doing so...

The sonics on this are identical to the US Promo pressing. In other words, it sounds great.
