Notes

British production, featuring vocalists Ian Gillan, Murray Head, Mike D'Abo, Yvonne Elliman among others.

Recorded at Olympic Studios (Barnes), Advision and Island Studios.

Produced by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice.

Original Soundtrack: Various - Jesus Christ Superstar (The Original Motion Picture Sound Track Album) (USA 1973)

There also exists the other popular companion to this release: Various - Jesus Christ Superstar (The Original Motion Picture Sound Track Album), which is the 'soundtrack' of the film adaptation that was released some three years later.
It featured the three main performers Ted Neeley as Jesus, Carl Anderson as Judas and retained Yvonne Elliman as the voice of Mary Magdalene.

Bad noise reduction on this mastering, stick to the 1990 AAD CD.

This was the second album I ever owned, at the age of 13 on its original release. I played it into the ground so I was excited to see this half-speed remaster including recreation of the packaging available. Fell in love with it all over again playing sides 1 and 2. But then Pontius Pilate on Side 4 happened - sibbillance and distortion is off the scale during the song making it completely unlistenable. How can they have messed this up so badly? Ugh! Back to the CD I go!

My copy is crystal clear with no pops
or crackles. Sound is perfect as played on my rega 3. I have heard better vocals live and most recently when the staged version was at Bradford Alhambra ( 2023) but the recording itself as originally made is fine.

This is the case when you expect the sound from old vinyl that will be warmer and more soulful than on CDs, and you really get it in full power. This does not always happen in our lives, but in the case of this old German press it is the absolute truth.

I am coming back to this almost 2 years later from my original, not so good review below. I have upgraded every component in my rig since then, most notably my turntable. Guess what? I still stand by it. Actually, this pressing is even WORSE than I remember. The Apple Music 24-bit version is still better, but not by much. These new 50th Anniversary Versions are among the worst modern versions you can buy today. (Oh and by the way, I've never heard a vinyl version of this that sounds good. Not an original US, original UK, German, remaster, etc. They are all pretty lousy - and I'm a vinyl guy!)

There are strange EQ choices on this remaster that render it hollow and shrill sounding. Strings don't soar, brass instruments are thin, and the bass doesn't THUMP. Everything is just so flat and impaled. The vocals have no air or breath to them. The compression is awful, yes, but the 2012 CD is just as compressed yet it sounds considerably better. There is just no life to this vinyl copy whatsoever, and the digital counterpart is so dynamically crushed and clipped; it's sad.

So which is the best version? Well, the 2012 digital remaster is quite a bit better than this, and it pushes some of the vocals up a bit in the mix. It sounds mostly correct, but it is also crushed, and has no dynamic pump to it. It is missing all of the shimmer on the top end. The original CDs have no life to them either. They've got the dynamics in tact, but sound like bad dubs at worst, and just shoddy mastering at best. Dark, dull, boring.

The absolute best version I've heard is the MCA CD version with the white cover and gold logo, silverface discs. Man, that thing just SMOKES. It has all of the high end that this version is sorely lacking and has all of the dynamics well in tact. It shimmers, it thumps, it glows...however you want to say it, it does it. Some say it's too bright; I disagree, I think it's right where it should be. I can hear everything so clearly. A really great remaster just before the loudness wars got into high gear.

So, avoid all of the recently remastered nonsense, and keep all vinyl copies on the shelf at the local Goodwill. Go out and find yourself the silverface, white cover, 2-disc MCA USA CD version of this. Crank it up and dim the lights.

                        You'll thank me later.
