Notes
This is the original 1975 debut release, recorded at Festival Studios in Australia, and produced by David Russell (2) and Split Enz. In 1976, six tracks that were first recorded for Mental Notes (four of which, "Walking Down A Road", "Titus", "Stranger Than Fiction" and "Time For A Change", appeared on this album) were re-recorded in Britain, along with three new songs, for Split Enz' second release Split Enz - Second Thoughts (produced by Phil Manzanera), which was released outside Australasia as "Mental Notes".

This album is nothing like their mid-80s albums. It's progressive rock/pop from the mid 1970s. The song writing is excellent and the musicianship is great. Good guitar solos, and piano solos and trumpet solos and interesting experimental rhythms and runs.
Is it pretentious? Of ocurse, it's progressive rock from the mid-1970s. Give yourself over to it. The grooves are great.

Data has to be wrong on this. I don't see how the New Zealand pressings are all re issues? The band is from there, and I really doubt they had overseas distro. this early on...???
