' Hobos are people who move around looking for work, tramps are people who move around but don't look for work, and bums are people who don't move and don't work. I've been all three. That quote draws not only the rough past of Seasick Steve as well as his wit and ability to deal with adversity. That is of course also the blues in a nutshell. The blues is given to Steve, because even on Sonic Soul Surfer he convinces with its angular blues rock. With his three-string guitar and it crunches and smoky voice scours the 73-year-old Steve again from the speakers. Sometimes he does that intentionally Cross (as in the pounding opener Roy's Gang) but regularly also strikingly subdued like in the folky In Peaceful Dreams. In terms of appearance should Seasick Steve with his three years beard and mud-smeared bib might seem an unlikely star, but with its powerful blues songs proves this ex-homeless time and time again are equal.
