James Brown – Sex Machine

Very collectable and unusual pressing of this iconic album, the fact that it's shortened is not bad imho.
Since it was never a audiophile recording to begin with it does sound basically as good as the black label king first press.
The pressing quality is surprisingly good, but always a bit crackly since it's highly unlikely to find a near mint copy.

Took a gamble here, as I couldn’t find much about this release anywhere. But have to say I’m impressed! Discs are flat and deadsilent after one round on the Okki Nokki. I cannot imagine this being AAA, but it sounds pretty awesome. Thumping bass, clean highs, great soundstage, detailed and very natural sounding. Get on up’ah! ;)

My record came in top condition: flat, noice-free and beautiful antistatic sleeves. The pckaging look great in my eyes, nort a "Wow", but ratjer that great.

I think the remaster is superb i everyway. Have an german 1st, and this one sounds better!

here too there is an error, it is impossible that this album was released in 1970, Polydor is always the reissue of 1976, moreover, James Brown signed with Polydor in 1971, how is it possible that this is from 1970?

Famous lopsided “live “ and live .
All amazing studio cuts , a terrific new progressive 4/4 funky philosophical Brother Rapp; an impassioned self cover of Bewildered , send the kids to bed ....same with oversexed Self cover of recent million seller , Sex machine .
Self cover of Give it up or turnit loose is his 1970 self cover and is perhaps his most hard hitting polyrhythm - stubblefield is the funky drummer , Bobby Byrd in restrained but perfect organ , and JB at his screaming best . Again , not for the kiddies or visiting grandma .
Real live sides are from oct 1, 1969 in Georgia and boast 2-3 great performances , particularly if I Ruled the World .
Rest fairly dismissible .....Brown a little tired and the band comes off a little mechanical .
What should have been two great separate albums (now the real live show has been finally released !) emerges just as a handy party album for adults .

Combo of “live “ and live : Ohio studio and Georgia stage . Disc one much better - his vocal dynamics are unbelievable on every track , esp “brother rapp”, something different for time and a recut of “give it up or turn it a loose “, an amazing iconic cut w a powerful back beat yet understated insistent organ - not really for the kiddies , this one is smokin ‘ hot . As is the recut of the old ballad “bewildered “ an emotional masterpiece but again adult fare .
The real live stuff is pretty badly mixed / produced . ONE good track , the greatest version of “if I ruled the world”, ever !
Still more curiously oversexed entries - send the kids to bed and pull down the blinds .

This is a piece of Afro-Beat history! The Funk blueprint album, printed in Fela Kuti's homeland. James Brown is one of Fela's main inspirations. Fela's 1st album dates from 1970, the same year JB's Sex Machine is released.

High excitement as expected but strangely , the best live material here is not live , just studio cuts with overdubbed applause .
The actual live material is badly mixed and not nearly as good as other live concerts now available for audition on YouTube : there’s a full 1969 concert done at Newport which kicks the everlovin’ out of this mess.
But until polydor issues it, we have this double album .
Best cuts are Brother Rapp, the number one hit; bewildered , an impassioned take on his 1959 hit, in fact a little over the top for the kiddies ;sex machine , a different version from the million seller, more “adultisms” but with a wonderful rap with the band ;give it up or turn it a loose , by far his best version , more adult content but beautifully produced , drums and organ blending well with the studio echo . That’s the first half of this set .
Of the real live in concert stuff, the only great track is if I Ruled the World .
We are told the full concert is due out this year . We’ll see.
