Yeah. This is just a freaking joy to listen to. If you can, grab yourselves a copy. Musically it's just a fab album, sonically it's a delight to the ears.

Good pressing that has one or two pops, but I think they will go away with a more thorough cleaning. I haven't cranked the volume yet but at normal listening levels the record sounds great.

Bit of a mystery, here--missed this on initial release, and had been looking for a copy for the last few months. You know, occasional Google searches etc... Anyway, found it "in stock" at an online shop for retail, ordered, and it actually showed up (I was expecting an inventory glitch). The record came sealed and appears to be the above version in every conceivable way (even has the obi), but has no poster or download card. So...is this a repressing that just hasn't been listed or shown up at other stores yet? Were there versions of the '15 pressing without the poster and download card? Not sure what exactly I've got here--I'm pretty sure it's not a boot (haven't heard tell of or seen boots of this one, and the packaging is beautiful, way higher quality than any boot I've ever seen), so is it a brand new repress or something else?

In retrospect, this really does feel like a band finding its way back into being a band. It’s fantastic, but compared to the two new songs they’ve released in 2023, it feels incredibly transitional. Like it was a necessary stepping stone to where they find themselves now. It’s beautiful stuff, but feels tentative in some way, like light touches of fingers on skin. The new stuff in 2023 sounds more like it’s led by strong vision and a united drive in comparison.

What an album! They sound more mature, more melodic, but the same old band. Awesome songs that create a repeatedly aller-retour London-Tokyo trip. Just beautiful.
As for this LP issue, needless to say that it’s a true gem for everyone’s collection.

This one went over my head back in 2015 when I bought it. Looking back 8 years now I can’t remember one thing from it! I listened to Think Tank a lot in 2003 but on recent listening it sounded sparse and lacked depth. No Coxon, no great guitar riffs I guess. It’s also hard not to hear the influence of Gorillaz on Albarns songs.
Blur from 1997 is a superb album along with MLIR, Parklife and TGE. 13 is a bit muddled as the songs get lost in William Orbits dense production.
Anyway on listening to The Magic Whip today, it opens with the Blur sound we’re familiar with from the early to mid 90s. Coxons guitar was and is an extremely important part of the band and the music they make. It’s almost like a lost Blur album from 1996! It’s mature Blur, there are no tricks or fancy impressionistic gimmicks.
The package itself is something else too, there’s an Asian influence, possibly as recordings were made in Hong Kong, the sleeve is beautiful and even has an Obi strip like vinyl from Japan. The 12 tracks are spread over 2 superbly pressed platters.
There’s a double sided giant poster, two printed inner sleeves, a mirror on the rear of the heavy card matt gatefold sleeve and a download card. All in all I’m glad I own this pressing as I’d hate to be paying the high prices being asked now.

From Hong Kong With Love: A Brilliant Album Almost Unreleased

I like to imagine everyone in Blur was sitting around a room, and after a long silence of watching everyone else coming out with albums, without saying anything, they all stood up, walked in unison to the recording studio in the next room and hit record. They had never turned off their creativity, just left it unplugged for 12 years.

Artists and groups sometimes tie their album's production with the physical place they recorded it. Blur sporadically recorded this during a long week in Hong Kong, and if that was the magic that made this album so listenable, I want all my favorite groups to fly to Hong Kong for a week. The album will connect to everyone in a different way, but it sounded like Broken Bell's outer space sound, combined with Damon's Britpop flavor, and a lot more electronic sounds you've heard with other Blur works. It's an alternative rock band's album alright, but no particular sound is overpowering another; Damon's voice so perfectly compliments the instruments, as the instruments dance with his voice. Alternative rock groups wish their 'creative' side, which usually leaves the listener a little weirded out, sounded as good as Blur just being, well...Blur.

It's easy to be skeptical when a group has been out so long, then comes out with another album. Thankfully, this is the first album released this year that has left me simultaneously pleasantly relaxed and upbeat. I'm glad Blur emerged from the scattered years and created this album for everyone to enjoy and didn't leave it unfinished in the Orient: it's going to get a lot of plays in my circle. I don't have a clever ice cream or Blur reference to end this review on, but this album is a flavor of music we've been missing that has brought clarity to my cloud-filled album library.

Just wow. This thing sounds amazing. What a high quality pressing and impressive packaging. This is what vinyl is all about. Musically, I appreciate this album more now than when it was originally released and I listened to it digitally. It's pretty standard Blur fare with just a touch of Damon's work on Gorillaz bleeding through.
