Reviews
- Edited 10 months agoAfter all the years I can finally say that Dougal's mix on this Bonkers is the best hardcore mix ever for me, and totally shaped my taste in hardcore - no other mix before or after ever came close. The second best I can think of is Dougal & UFO's Hardcore Till I Die but still loosing to this one. Practically the "perfect formula" taking the best of Next Generation, Quosh, Raw Elements, Raver Baby, CLSM's G-Core, Stargazer engineered "Find A Way" and of course Essential Platinum, perfect progression and mixing too as it should be. 5/5 for me and a must for every UK Hardcore fan.
- Disc 1 takes a couple of tracks to really get going, but I really enjoy it from about where Samplemania kicks in. Some real classics like Take Me on Up and Hardcore Fever lead in to Helix's stellar Get It Right, and the tracks that follow are all great. It's debatable whether or not Welcome and Turn Up The Music are "oldskool", but I'm not all that fussed given they're both fantastic.
Disc 2 starts off with a frankly amazing mix of Overdrive and there's a lot of good freeform in here overall; not a whole lot to say about it.
Unfortunately Bonkers 13 is where Scott Brown stops playing Bonkers sets and starts playing Scott Brown sets. Don't get me wrong, it's good, but listening to the same production style for over an hour straight does get a little old. It's worth it for The Prophecy Unfolds.
Dougal's mix is ridiculously good, and possibly my favourite Bonkers mix to date. By this point in time Gammer seems to have gotten an idea of where he wants his production style to go and it really shows: the transition from Heaven on Earth into Back 2 Front is full of energy and brings out his sound fantastically. Still The One follows and leads into The Theme, another great pair of tracks. I prefer the original, but Scott Brown's remix of Get Hype is a good one. Substance and Drifting Away round it off very nicely. - This release was awesome! IMO the last of the best releases, aside from a few cds from the more recent bonkers..
Every DJ did a awesome job but i gotta say DJ Hixxy's Old Skool Killa Kuts surprised me the most; flawless mix, best cd on this release IMO. Get this release; you will not regret it. - I actually like Scott Brown's mix the most of the four. It was the first SB Bonkers mix I'd listened to (I bought vol 13 after vol 7) and I enjoyed it. Plus it's great for windtrainer sessions with very few breakdowns, which annoy the crap out of me. I'm also not sure how riverghost bags the compilation so much then gives it 5/5 stars. To be honest I can't really comment on the other three mixes because I haven't listened to them as much as SB's mix, which is now permanently etched in my brain after so many listens, although I probably didn't like Dougal's mix (I tend to enjoy his the least on any Bonkers compilation).
- is there a song with the noise of a horse in it? such a belter tune, cant find it anywhere cant remember which bonkers it was on. my mate said its on the scott brown cd :/ ?
- Edited 19 years agoOpposite of what most have been saying about this Bonkers release, I think it is very good. Hixxy's mix starts slow, but picks up and keeps a good pace. Pretty much a fun little trip through some old skool fun. Sharkey's mix is... unbelievable... a none stop rampage. Flawless mixing and an amazing track selection... it just flows so well... and is so well executed. Scott Browns mix is actually very good. It may follow his usual mixing style, but the track selection is good and left me plenty satisfied. Maybe not amazed, but satisfied. Dougal's set is also... unbelievable. Totally ridiculously happy. Endless good songs, and flawless mixing. Lots of fun. Bonkers 13 is defiantly worth getting your hands on, unlike what has been said. Hixxy and Scott Brown deliver... while Sharkey and Dougal blow your mind!
- Edited 20 years agoMediocrity at best, though Sharkey's and Dougal's mix are quite billiant, Scott Brown's style is starting to get a little boring. Cookie cutter beats and bad track selection plague his mix. Hixxy's mix is an old skool set, which i am not even going to talk about, because frankly it bores me. Sharkey's mix on the other hand is amazing, up until now Sharkey's style has been simply growing, now i believe it has peaked. Tracks like "London-Helsinki Underground", "Hardcore Revolution" and "Chemicals In Motion" make buying this entire mix worth while. Dougal's mix is just as good, and is by far the "happiest" of all the mixes. Some of the standout tracks include "Be Happy" and "Get Hype". I would recommend this CD to those who are new to the genre. Veterans will simply get tired.
