A Tribute to Jack Johnson is a studio album by American jazz musician Miles Davis, released February 24, 1971 on Columbia Records. It also serves as the soundtrack for a documentary by Bill Cayton about the heavyweight world champion boxer Jack Johnson.
The first major recording session for the album, which took place on April 7, 1970, was almost accidental: John McLaughlin, awaiting Miles's arrival, began improvising riffs on his guitar, and was shortly joined by Michael Henderson and Billy Cobham. Meanwhile, the producers brought in Herbie Hancock, who had been passing through the building on unrelated business, to play the Farfisa organ. Miles arrived at last and began his solo at about 2:19 on the first track.
The album's two long tracks were assembled in the editing room by producer Teo Macero. "Right Off" is constructed from several takes and a solo by Davis recorded in November 1969. It contains a riff from Sly and the Family Stone's "Sing a Simple Song". Much of the track "Yesternow" is built around a slightly modified version of the bassline from the James Brown song "Say It Loud - I'm Black and I'm Proud"; this may be a deliberate allusion to the song's Black Power theme as it relates to the film's subject. "Yesternow" also incorporates a brief excerpt of "Shhh/Peaceful" from Davis's 1969 album In a Silent Way and a 10-minute section comprising several takes of the tune "Willie Nelson" from a session on 18 February 1970.

- This sounds incredible. Especially for the price. It’s hard to imagine the mofi copy being much better.
- Edited 3 months agoFor those wondering how this pressing stacks up against the standard MoFi from 2015, this listener offers a brief comparison: https://youtu.be/BeTnubfQAIg?si=qa4qPgEUFooXYu-u
(TLDR: SV=lower noise floor in quiet sections, otherwise no discernible difference) - and they still call this DSD crap ULTRA ANALOG ... how can they still not know the diffrence between analog and digital ???
- It's the top of my cover that's got the seam split. But the record is kind of amazing. The differences between this and my other pressing (the 2020 We Are Vinyl-branded reissue, which is perfectly fine) are at first subtle, particularly for Right On, which has always been the side of the record that's dominated my attention. On first listen I wasn't entirely sure that the increased clarity and the greater sense of space (it's less a case of a wider soundstage and more like the instruments each have a little bit more room to breathe, somehow) represented an improvement. It's different, though, and that can be jarring and a little difficult to get your head around when it's a record you've listened to a lot. But Yesternow is just sensational, particularly the Willie Nelson parts, where there's an abundance of small but significant detail I'm hearing for the first time, little nuances in Henderson's playing that make the whole thing come alive, keyboards and trumpet stabs that have an almost physical presence, points where McGlaughlin's playing communicates thought and intent, not just rhythm, melody and tone. I immediately played that through a second time, something I've never felt like I wanted to do before. And then went back to Right On, which still has that sense of being not what I'm used to, but in a way that makes me want to listen to it more. And louder. When the neighbours aren't in bed, maybe. So it's two thumbs up from me.
- Of course mine came with a split on the bottom of the jacket (shipping the record outside of the jacket is an easy fix for this common issue, MoFi!), but this pressing sounds absolutely incredible. The supervinyl is also gorgeous when holding up to a light!
