- Edited one year agoMuch like the other hi-res Utada Hikaru remasters of 2018, these are sadly extremely poor in quality. The original CD releases were victims of the loudness war in a big way and, much like those, every track on the remasters is visibly brick-walled in the waveforms.
It's evident that none of the proper tools were used to assist with amplification artifacts, as errors and clipping are so obvious that even family and friends of mine (who listen to free Spotify) complained of "fuzziness" and "crispiness" in these tracks. The only benefit of these releases was quieter parts of tracks and certain instruments were indeed clearer, but this is offset by a clearly over-amplified Utada clipping across every chorus. The hi-res aspect actually makes the issue worse, as the clipping is only much sharper and more pronounced than it was previously.
Heart Station unfortunately probably has the most "completely brick-walled" tracks of any 2018 Utada remaster release when viewing the waveforms. Flavor Of Life is badly clipped in both mixes and even the instruments take a hit too. Beautiful World and Fly Me To The Moon were remastered again in 2021 for the One Last Kiss single and were much improved over this release with much better dynamic range and clipping mitigation, likely due to them going back to the original source/master mix.
Knowing this, it's likely many of the original mixes/masters of Utada's material are of decent dynamic range and quality. It's unfortunate that it appears they did not do this for the 2018 remasters. - Heartbroken that my C4 track "テイク 5" aka "Take 5" just cuts out about two minutes earlier than it's meant to end. Like the song is going strong and not even a fade out, I've never seen that on a vinyl pressing. Has anyone noticed that? It's an obvious oversight and an insane one at that. How did that get past the QA process???
- Sound: perfect sound and volume, not background noise at all. The LP really helped me to like the record more than before!
