Excellent sounding LP, mastered & pressed with skill which renders that unique type of spacious 3-D liquid sound all audiophiles hope for.- Hey I was only 17 when I joined the Record Club of America. But I always took good care of my albums and I'm glad because this is one of my favorites and it sounds fabulous.
I might be the first to say this on this thread; this bests the AP 45 issue by a mile. The AP pressing is far too warm, where as MFSL presents a much more even sounding master on this particular AAA issue.
And yes, post MOFI gate, this is still AAA.
Anyone know how this compares to the 2009 Classic Records 200g pressing? Or even the 2021 50th anniversary remaster?- The past couple of years I've become reluctant to buying vinyl because the pressing quality has plummeted the past few years, while prices have skyrocketed. But is is one album that has to be enjoyed from vinyl, or else it doesn't count. Going by the reviews below I decided it was worth to take a shot and I have to say this is a beautifully manufactured album. Silent, no clicks or plops and amazing transient repsonse, great detail and good dynamic range (i.e. no compression for loudness).
- I also have the 50th Anniversary edition, which I thought was very good. This is even better, more dynamic, quieter vinyl, more "air" and space around the instruments. This is the first time in a long time where I've caught myself saying "wow!" out loud while listening.
Edited 9 months agoHow does this pressing handle the distortion in the vocals on the first track? When I bought the MOFI, I think the consensus was that it was baked into the tapes. But if this has less high end attenuation, hopefully there is less distortion.- This is as good as it's going to get folks.
The LP's are detailed, airy, and Crosby and the Guitars sound great.
BG nailed it on this cut. - Edited one year agoI was unlucky and received a very dirty copy. It was the start of Side C that was very noisy, with crackle and lots of ticks and pops. Six trips through the ultrasonic cleaner got it down to one or two light ticks. The other three sides were basically silent right out of the box.
This is beautiful and extraordinary music. The album is a real journey, almost a story in sound. It is very manipulated sound, almost a sort of sonic collage. I think it helps to be intoxicated while listening.
Wide soundstage, good separation of instruments when that is intended, but some of the time you just hear a swirl of sound and I think that is what Crosby meant for us to hear.
I bought this having never heard the album before. I didn't know what to expect. I have played it three times through already and I liked it more each time. I think over time this may become one of my favorite records. Well worth $60, highly recommended.
