Reviews
- Edited 5 years agoContrary to the last release, Hixxy seems to give in here and Re-Con lets us down with a rather boring CD1. There's some good stuff sprinkled in there (the DS remix of Free Your Mind, Angels, and Silver Water come to mind), but it's balanced by Report To The Bassline, which is possibly the worst hardcore track of all time. Not sure why anyone thought that cowbell was a good idea.
The letdown ends here, however, with Sharkey & CLSM bringing us *yet another* stellar freeform mix. Kutski's scratching was a nice touch, especically in Enigma and One With The Beat.
Possible bias on my part here: CD3 was my introduction to the series and hardcore in general. It's good. Really, really good. Whoever had the idea to start off with Micro N2 (I suspect Gammer, given the tracklist seems to suggest it's mixed back to back) is a genius. Scott Brown & Gammer may seem like a slightly weird pairing (sadly no Dougal in this release), but Gammer pulls Scott away from just playing his own songs and the tracklist ends up extremely strong. It goes from a smidge of breakbeat to a mix of Scott's style and Gammer's high energy, upfront sound, has a bit of a "should I?" moment with some happy-harder songs between Body Flow and How Many Sukkas?, says "yeah, I'll go for it" and thows in some gabber, then shouts "fuck it" and has Gammer play a sped up Fuck The Rails to end it all (the original mix is around 170bpm, whereas here he goes all out and slams the pitch fader down bringing it to a crisp 200). While Fuck The Rails is basically the hardcore equivalent of marmite, it's definitely a fitting end to the ride. - Edited 18 years agoSince bonkers twelve, the bonkers compilations have gradually decreased in quality, bonkers sixteen signals a return of the most fantastic hardcore compilation series in circulation. Hixxy and Re-Con's mix showcases the traditional raverbaby style with happy vocal tunage. Though there isnt anything particularly new about this third of the compilation, its still a strong mix which will definately excite. Sharkey's mix is stellar as usual, and the back 2 back collaboration mixing with CLSM sees his traditional freeform take on a more breakbeat/vocal element. From beginning to end their third of the album thrills with the best experimental and forward thinking hardcore tunes. The third disk signals the return of Scott Brown to the top of the game. Mixed back 2 back with Gammer, this disk is easily the strongest mix of the compilation in my opinion, from start to finish the mix is a blast to listen to. There isnt a dull moment. Scott's particular take on the upfront sound mixes impeccably well with Gammer's aggressive hard trance infused style to create a wild sonic ride. Bonkers sixteen is the best bonkers album in a long time, its an essential purchase for any hardcore lover who wants to rock out to the best.
