I'm a huge fan of Scarlett Johansson as an actrice (and ok, I admit, I find her the most beautiful woman on earth)so when I heard about this album I just picked it up without listening. I didn't have any expectations of her musical side but this is actually a very fine album. It's definitely not a milestone in musical history, nor is it super original sounding but that doesn't always have to be the case to be good. And this album is good. Scarlett's voice really matches with the melancholic melodies and sounds of the music. A lot of songs remind me of Air's soundtrack from The Virgin Suicides, it has the same vibe, very soft and easy listening yet with a dark and super melancholic twist. Fannin Street and Song For Jo are really beautiful songs that I could listen to a couple of times in a row when played at the right time and place. I Wish I Was In New Orleans is a super sweet lullaby but it has another atmosphere than the other tracks, it's more theatrical but it doesn't bother at all, a very nice song. The only song that I find a bit dull is I Don't Wanna Grow Up because of the rather cheap electronic basslines and synths, it's a bit too pompous and it kind of breaks the album but nothing is perfect I guess. And after that song, No One Knows I'm Gone picks up the melancholic atmosphere again, so not too many harm done.
Anywhere I Lay My Head is nothing new but it's a keeper for sure.

One of those albums that sound pompous at first mention, but Scarlett joined the right team and produced an album reflecting her personal tastes rather than those of industry's play-it-safe imperatives. 'Anywhere I Lay My Head' isn't perfect, there are quite a lot of obvious references to call it 'original' - yet, there is still something beautiful, charming and sincere getting to the fore. Today when we're constantly bombarded by fake indie bands in the wake of 'The Someones' or 'The Whoevers', 'Anywhere I Lay My Head'' is a fine contrast, confronting its selection of Tom Waits standards with dream-like flavour.
