Uncommon Ritual is not just a display of extraordinary musicianship but also a reference-level recording and should be celebrated not just for the profundity of the performances but for its sonic richeness. Edgar Meyer, on double bass, pushes the instrument beyond traditional limits, particularly on the virtuosic performance of “Zigeunerweisen”, where he masterfully pulls high notes that seem impossible for the double bass. This piece, originally by Spanish composer Pablo de Sarasate, is a fiery showpiece inspired by melodies from the Romani people. Meyer’s interpretation, alongside Fleck and Marshall, highlights his technical prowess and the trio’s seamless interaction.
The album’s use of 20-bit recording technology enhances every nuance, allowing each instrument’s timbre to resonate fully. Beyond “Zigeunerweisen,” pieces like “Sliding Down” and “Big Country” showcase their roots in Americana, folk, and classical traditions, delivering a masterclass in genre-blending acoustic music.
A must-listen for anyone seeking rich acoustic textures and inventive performances! referencing Uncommon Ritual (CD, Album) SK 62891
Absolutely brilliant. I listened to this almost everyday for several years through highschool and it really helped shape my musical style. The has an almost haunting beauty to it and the musicianship is obviously amazing. Certainly a desert island album for me. It's hard to pick stand out tracks since they are all so good but the title track, Sliding Down, Big Country, and In The Garden are some of my favorites. If you haven't heard this album please check out out.
