Notes:
The original Piano LP issue has "Testcard" sound on run-ins and run-out's which lead to locked grooves.
These Records reissues were a different mix, advertised as an improved version at the time, although there is no mention of any remix on the product. Most notable the "Testcard" was at a lower level, and the general sound was punchier/crisper.
The RéR Megacorp distributed This Is label reissue reverts back to the original LP version and is about as authentic as is possible.

I have the original Piano issue and I must say that this record has never sounded as good as on this reissue. I'm hearing so much more details, so it's like discovering it all over again. The record itself is a little bit warped but it doesn't affect the sound. However there is a little noise, here and there, which shouldn't happen. Nevertheless I'm very happy with this purchase and I recommend to buy it. You wouldn't be disappointed.

Anyone elses slightly warped? Is that a colored vinyl thing?

Really frustrated with LITA. preordered these on the day they were announced in November and just got word today (Jan 26) that my order won't be sent cause they're out of stock. I ordered them in November and there were plenty left. What the hell.

Interesting experimental sound. Avantgarde ? Sure. ''Punk'' ? No relation.

Wow, and here I (stupidly) thought I scored with an actual Japanese pressing.
Thankfully it doesn't sound too bad, but I feel like I wasted $18, especially considering they are officially reissuing their discography.
Sounds nearly identical to the CD remaster with a bit of noise at times, and added coloration/quality due to my set up.

This Heat's first album combines tape loops, musique concret interludes, punishing drumming, hypnotic grooves, studio tricks and some incredibly surreal songwriting.
24 Track Loop and Horizontal Hold have a studio-as-instrument vibe... lock-groove rock....there's much in common with dub reggae.
The Fall of Saigon and Twilight Furniture are strange but melodic almost-pop sings.
Water, Rainforest and Diet of Worms are more freeform abstract pieces.
Really this album is a high water mark of UK post-punk (although some tracks were actually recorded pre-punk in Feb. 1976).

My original '79 french Atem pressing has exactly the same cover- and backcover-artwork as the original from the UK, unlike the straight blue one shown here.

Puzzling, musically adventurous and a fiery finale with "Fall of Saigon". More antirock than rock, and more extreme than followup "Deceit" yet curiously pleasing to the ear.

Although I knew of THIS HEAT, I had apparently never heard them. Without reading the accompanying blurb, I spotted a leaning towards FAUST (“Krautrock” - that great-but-infuriating-intro-that-goes-nowhere track). I’m no expert, but I kept spotting a whole plethora of others who either influenced or seemed to be influenced by THIS HEAT - THE POP GROUP, early SCRITTI POLITTI, WIRE, Hell, even SUN RA’s in there somewhere.
They have a novel, and sometimes grating approach to how they mix the music, and how one track relates to another - the overall structure. On one track percussion full forward, on another, mixed so far back it hardly even adds anything to the ambience.

How can you get bored with an album it’s almost impossible to become familiar with. More than a free-form rock / anti-rock, something much, much more.

Originally reviewed for Soft Watch.

This Heat were a unique band mixing punk attitude with progressive tendencies, English whimsy with German experimentalism. This album, compiled from studio sessions and live cassettes, captures their early incandescence. 24 track loop develops the tape loop technique, Horizontal Hold is reminiscent of Robert Wyatt and Fall of Saigon is a mournful ode to the ambassadors cat, with Bullen's guitar echoing the work of Michael Karoli. In fact the influence of Can and Faust can be felt throughout, tere certainly weren't many UK bands this far out. Not for the faint hearted, This Heat were a howl of rage against society, more catharsis than showbiz. A legendary album.
