Sparks - When Do I Get To Sing "My Way" is another survivor from the mid-90s dark ages for vinyl, when only "dance music" was being issued on the format. In the UK, 12-inch singles morphed from being at 45rpm to being mastered at 33 1/3 rpm on the same machines as those used for the tiny amount of LPs that were being manufactured. Presumably it was one less button for the underworked mastering engineer to press if the speed was left at 33 1/3.

To the music: Track A1 is quite good. Outstays its welcome a little, but Sparks' melodic genius and smart-but-not-annoying lyrics cut through the period house music production and mix.

Track B1 was remixed by The Grid - a.k.a. Dave Ball formerly of electro trailblazers Soft Cell - and is quite fun. The other mixes are a bit of a test of the patience, if I'm honest. A2 maybe redeems itself with some eerie, swelling strings, but ends up going "Donk-donk-donk-donk..." as 101 other dance remixes did at the time. What made Sparks special and unique is pretty much squeezed out of these endless four-to-the-floor dance versions. Maybe if you took the right drugs, I dunno. And there are no such things as "the right drugs", kids, remember...

A missed opportunity. None of these remixes do anything interesting, they're all way too close to the original. Simply go for the album version instead.
