This is worse than the CD, and everything below is completely true.
Totally poorly compressed.- This sounds so so good once you crank it up a bit. The clarity and the dynamic range (the Mis-shapes chorus will take you by surprise if you're not ready) are fantastic and the bass sounds good despite the long runtime. I've not heard an original to compare it to, but this one sounds really fantastic with no distortion and so much energy. I wonder if any later reissues have been pressed from the same plates - it should be a no-brainer once you've got a cut this good to keep using it.
Interestingly (perhaps), based on the runouts (ending in 320) and release year (2004) it seems very likely it was pressed here by this guy: https://www.analogplanet.com/content/whos-cutting-those-lacquers-part-2-0 and it sounds like he's very particular about only cutting from analogue tape, even going so far as to check the transfers for digital artefacts. I can't honestly imagine this album was recorded to analogue tape in the first place given that would have been positively archaic by 1995, but whatever the signal chain someone obviously put a lot of care into making this record sound good. - I think the value here is in this rare sought after aperture sleeve. The vinyl quality is bellow par in my opinion but this is the case with many 1990's vinyl where they cram too many songs per side. This is definitely crying out for a double vinyl release.

The album is dire need of a 2xLP re-issue. It's baffling why this hasn't happened yet.- Edited 7 months agoAt this point in my life, I’ve heard almost every copy available of this LP. The original European pressings are regarded as notoriously bad, just as they were back then. The 2004 pressing was the one I grew up with, and was better but not mind blowing. This has been my favorite copy so far.
This release does not include the pictures that were included in the Aperture releases, unfortunately. The standard Def Jam/Island pressing includes them. In my opinion this is an important part of the album presentation. Still, this is the best copy.
Maybe one day I’ll find myself trying the Plain or Simply Vinyl copies. But for now, I’m content with this being my play copy. This is long overdue for the double LP treatment. - On the one hand, I can understand the negative reviews, but on the other hand, one should first proceed analytically and then name the ‘mistakes’ in an argumentative manner. To do this, I compared the 1995 CD and the 2006 remaster. In the 2006 edition, the remaster is not particularly successful because the mid-range has been boosted too much for my taste. However, as with the 1995 version, the bass runs are rather muffled and not particularly accentuated, so that the entire bass range sounds a bit muddy. The treble is also too pronounced on the 2006 version. The sound engineer has probably over-emphasised the treble to contrast the muddy bass. However, both editions lack dynamics. I suspect that some of the recordings and the master at the time were not really coherent. This vinyl edition is very probably based on the remaster from 2006. The thing that always annoys me here is that obviously no sounded vinyl master, as is normally done, was made. Therefore, no special vinyl sound can be produced if the base has already been screwed up. The vinyl output actually sounds thin and not very differentiated. My edition also has a lot of crackling, which is somehow normal in these times. Perhaps a sound engineer will soon come along who understands his job and gives this great music a decent remaster. Until then, we simply have to send this disc back and get our money back. Because it's worthless that way.
