The '80's and early '90's almost spelled doom for "Stevie Wonder".....But at the same time, after recording so many classic albums, we cannot realistcally expect him to always crank out a classic (especially at this stage of his Career).....
Then there's "Conversation Peace".....
No, I would not dare call it a classic.....What I would call it is, what we always wanted, "Stevie" being "Stevie"....Without trying too hard to fit in, or trying to conform to updated standards, "Stevie" finally realized that he is his own standard....
The album starts off in "Stevie" fashion with, "Rain Your Love Down"...It kind of sounds like a fast version of "Love's In Need Today"....
"Edge Of Eternity" is a ok song, nice to listen to...
"Taboo To Love" (the 1st Crown Jewel), kind of sounds like it could have been Recorded in the '70's, if it wasn't for the style of Keyboards played....
"Take The Time Out" (featuring "Ladysmith Black Mambazo") and "I'm New" (featuring "Deniece Williams" & "Take 6"), are very though provoking songs, even though they slightly miss the Crown Jewel treatment....
Now, the 2nd Crown Jewel, "My Love Is With You", is a fantastic "Stevie Wonder Plea" against Gun Violence (still needed toady)!!!!!!!!
One of my favorites on the album is the 3rd Crown Jewel, "Treat Myself"....It has an infectious Melody that just sticks with you....
"Tomorrow Robins Will Sing" (featuring "Hip Hop" duo "Born Jamericans") is a pretty ok song, but it's wasn't all that to me personally...
"Sensuous Whisper", is the 4th Crown Jewel featuring "Branford Marsalis" on Saxophone, "Terence Blanchard" on Trumpet, and the one and only "Anita Baker" on Vocals....This is a spicy Jazzy joint, with outstanding Bass and Drums, accompanied by the Horns....
"For Your Love" (the Ultimate, Ultimate, Ultimate, Ultimate Ultimate, Ultimate Crown Jewel), is a "Classic Stevie Wonder Slow Jam", and is better than any song he released in years.....
My other favorite on here, and the 6th Crown Jewel is "Cold Chill"...In it's 7 minute splendor, It is a straight up jam...It is about a back and forth relationship, and it is outright funny!!!! I also have to look at my liner notes about who is gettin' down on the Guitar!!!!
The last two songs, "Sorry" and the "Title Track", just missed the Crown Jewel treatment...They are not bad at all, they are just not as good as the others that I mentioned...
You know what? As I rewrite this review I just realized something...I said earlier that this was not considered a classic, but I am writing about it as if it is a classic...Well, I guess I just changed my mind (Wow, that is something, even for me!!!!)....
What I really want to say is that this album brought some authenticity back to "Stevie"....It was better than anything he has done in years......I also thought it was cool to see that it was "Prince" (or "The Artist Formerly Known as Prince, as he was known as at the time), was really the one to help "Stevie", "See Music Again" (as he stated)... .
Well, how about that...All it took was time for me to get it....
PS: Maybe I can do the same thing to "Jungle Fever"....We'll see.....
PSS: "Motown", please put this on Vinyl!!!!!!
