Geinoh Yamashirogumi – Symphonic Suite Akira

Apparently the download code that comes with this edition is no good. The website it directs you to, soundtrax.com, just has a page stating the domain name is for sale. Oops.

CD mastering was a new art in the 1980s, so many CDs released in Europe and US during that decade weren't done so well, and they have a thin sound compared to 1990s discs... But Japanese engineers had clearly already mastered at the art by 1988, because this record (along other Japanese CDs of the era) sounds massive. There's no need to get any later reissue or remaster of Symphonic Suite Akira, the original version still rules.

A long, deep meditation on life, beauty, machines, and society, the soundtrack highlights how much of a spiritual journey Akira really is.

This record builds into something immensely powerful by the climax, Requiem, but it is supercharged from the start, likely because the music colors a truly visually rich and stunning anime motion picture.

It is meandering, and often isolating, throughout, but that is the intent of the film and the spiritual journey.

Only after the end, Requiem, does the journey make sense to me. I always forget how deep Akira really is.

A true treasure in my collection. Sound is top quality and artwork is beautiful. I highly recommend Geinoh Yamashirogumi other releases if you enjoy this album.

Could anyone having both the OG and one of the Milan represses comment on the differences in terms of sound quality and how they compare?

Purchased my copy from Am*z*n (much more reasonable price than on Discogs), and both discs were slightly warped, though thankfully not badly enough to affect play. There were also small corner dings on the outer jacket. The vinyl is very quiet, and the sound quality is very good, although a bit lacking in bass. As others have mentioned, the art spanning the inner gatefold looks like a digital image that was blown up beyond its resolution - slightly blurry or pixelated. Honestly, I'm happy with my purchase regardless. It's an amazing soundtrack that I'm glad to own a copy of on vinyl.

Something wrong with paper sleeve material, bought brand new, but vinyl is totally scuffed up on both sides. Why can’t they supply antistatic, non scratch sleeves; then print liner notes and art on a separate piece of paper?? Poor design and image quality, even the font is ugly as hell.

Scuffs doesn’t affect sound, just a little bit of light noise in the quieter parts on my set up. Sound wise, sad to say but high quality digital is better; same amp and headphones.

Can’t compare to original vinyl pressing. Need to turn volume way up, even then still sounds thin and flat AF. The parts where the odaiko/daikos come in are very telling.

Listening to the album uploaded onto YT, streamed on “highest quality”, i can feel a bit of the drums. On this pressing the vibrations are weak.

Honestly, not worth the retail price, even less so the going price on here. Disappointed.

Sounds absoluetly phenomenal, no surface noise and excellent full stereo sound. It is a bit of a shame it does not include the liner note download card from previous pressings.
