Really outstanding sounding pressing. Spacious and rich. Sadly, mine has a manufacturing defect on both sides C & D - there is a slight deformation that makes the first minute or so of music on side C unplayable. Side D fared better

Was James Thatcher in the soundtrack album credits? He did not appear in the cd?

My copy must be on “virgin vinyl”, it has a see-through quality similar to 80’s MFSL from Japan.

As of 2021 this La-La Land edition is now the definitive version of James Horner - Star Trek II: The Wrath Of Khan (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack), though if you're already happy with the previous releases featuring the full score, the improvements here aren't quite so dramatic that everyone needs to run out and grab it again (when you're resorting to "Amazing Grace bagpipes pitch shifted to key of D" as a bonus track, you're beyond scraping the bottom of the barrel and are now scraping the floor through a hole you've made in the barrel from so much scraping).

Still, the score has never sounded better, it features new liner notes, and it does seem we finally have heard EVERYTHING from these sessions (though this opts for the longer B-side edit from the single James Horner - Theme Of Star Trek II rather than the arguably more interesting A-side edit so I guess there's still something left...). And hey, it's just nice to have this score back in stock. A no-brainer if you don't already own this soundtrack.

This is one of James Horner's earliest soundtracks and I think safe to say one of his most massively popular ones. And it deserves the accolades because it is very well structured. It keeps very much with a brassy sound reminiscent of WWII action movies, perfect for the "submarines in space" feel of Wrath of Khan. It has an instantly recognizable main title theme. It's not exactly what one would call a timeless soundtrack, but it's damn perfect for the film and still a very enjoyable album to listen to all on its own today.

Retaining the tracklist from the original LP, Star Trek II's 1990 debut on CD is actually a pretty solid digest of the score. Honestly the only things missing that I'd consider essential are "Enterprise Attacks Reliant" and "Spock (Dies)". Features some odd liner notes that do a rundown of the entire plot of the film (and nothing about the music), and an "About James Horner" blurb. Oh, and a charming little form you can detach and mail in for a free catalog from GNP Crescendo records! :)

VERY dynamic! One of the great film scores, great reproduction.

Is there any way to differentiate the black vinyl variant from the Mutara nebula-coloured variant of this album from the outside packaging?

My local record store has a few sealed copies, and as far as I can find, the two variants have the same barcode, item number, etc. on the packaging...
