The London duo Audio Bullys consists of Simon Franks and Tom Dinsdale. Together they create very catchy dance music already in his own country as "punkhouse" and "hooligan house ' was labeled. The music and raps on the debut album Ego War resemble the cd Original Pirate Material that their compatriot Mike Skinner aka The Streets under the released in 2002. Themselves say the Audio Bullys especially influenced by rebellious sounding bands such as The Specials, Happy Mondays and Stereo MC's. In that list, in my opinion, still Fatboy Slim, Underworld and Chemical Brothers, because as with sound the latter acts (big-) beats, the grooves, the original samples and the production on Ego War accessible enough for the ' ordinary ' pop-and rock audience. In a vision I see even though tens of thousands of people on a large, Sun-drenched meadow (Pinkpop festival? Rock Werchter? Lowlands?) jumping up and down with the music by Audio Bullys while they massively hooligan house ' anthems ' as Real Life, We Don't Care (the great first single) and Veteran belt out. It is clear: Ego War is one of the best dance CDs that have appeared in 2003.

With a relatively pared-back production and fairly rudimentary lyrics, the Audio Bullys' "Ego War" album fills a nice hole in electronic music at the moment. The aforementioned simplicity of the Bullys' songs allows the listener to hear the music and the lyrics in concert with each other instead of the current trend of a "noise battle" of alot of stuff coming out.

All of their (recent) well-known songs are here, but my particular fave is "Face In The Cloud", which samples the old Family / Ric Grech vocal very nicely, and is not currently released as a single. The "hidden track" is the only weak point in my opinion, and comes across as a bit of a gimmicky afterthought. But it is still streets (excuse the pun) ahead of contempory music in this genre.

Well done guys!!!
