Great sounding pressing. A bit bright but that's how I remember it back in 72'..
Worth seeking out if a nice copy can be obtained.

Dynamic songs well arranged, a handful of finest musicians, strong take of sound, big soundscape, a joyfull album.

Minus a star for lacking much midrange. Great bass though. Vocals are up in the mix and solid. Pressing is flat and heavier than most US vinyl copies. All in all…a very listenable experience.

Original green label Warner Bros. pressings are nearly always a good bet, and this is one of the best, superb sound.

The DB’s mix rock, soul, R&B, country & pop, flawless acoustic & electric guitar interplay, intermingling harmonic vocals & a contagious backbeat to create an LP of feel-good cruising music.
              A cool, jammin' groove.

This early German press is friggin' killer! Great album, great pressing.

I was just home from Viet Nam when this album broke, I’d left the world wrapped in psychedelic and folk songs, only to be smitten by a number like “Listen to the Music” on my return, a brilliant bit of intoxicating sunlight, an essay on the wonders of just letting the music roll you over.

With the Doobie Brothers initial release failing to chart, the band knew they were onto something big, though they couldn’t wait for the music public to catch up with their notion of momentous rock n’ roll, kicking things up a notch, revamping the band with the addition of Tiran Porter on bass, expanding the rhythm section (including horns) and diversity, including a second drummer, giving the music a deeper more resonating sound that was tight enough for their well crafted songs.

Of course all of this only added to the mystery and suspense building around the Doobies, a band who were virtually impossible to define by genre, with flakes of rock, soul, country and pop interlacing each and every song with a sense of brightness and undiminished enthusiasm. Toulouse Street more than proved to be a consistently good effort, sounding effortless and totally original.

The Doobies presented a mellow yet rocking sound, one woven with flawless guitar work, intermingling harmonic vocals backed by an explorative framework of a contagious backbeat. That being said, it’s impossible, try as one might, not to be swept away by the acoustic and electric interplay, providing a framework of flowing symmetry that wrapped itself ever so gently around their dynamic blues-tinged solos and runs. Though perhaps Billboard magazine phrased it most accurately when they they said, “The Doobie Brothers' music pivots on an uncontrived musical lightness and a refreshing amount of sheer vitality and buoyant engaging spirits. The overall feel is slightly countrified, good time music.”

Now, those of you who are fans of the band, and simply must have the most tasty of recordings, Mobile Fidelity released the album on SACD, and it sounds wonderful, the noise level is low, something you’ve come to expect from SACD’s, there is simply staggering clarity and revealing transparency to the music, allowing you to actually hear ‘into’ the band’s dual lead guitars, dual vocals and twin drums, making it a contender for A- or B+ rating, though who am I kidding, it sounds amazing … yet at $39US new in 2009, that was a pretty hefty price.

*** The Fun Facts: The albums title was taken from Toulouse Street in the French Quarter of New Orleans, the once heart of the music and prostitution scene. The album photographs were taken at a former brothel on Toulouse Street.

In reality, according to an interview with the band's co-founder Tom Johnston, the name was coined by a roommate he was living with when the group was in its infancy. “We had a guy in the house who said, 'Why don't you call yourself the Doobie Brothers because you're always smoking’.”

At the time, it was rumored that the Doobie Brothers were a Hell’s Angels band, though that rumor was only been proven true due to the band’s northern California location.

Guessing mine was pressed in Terre Haute due to a "T" Etching but the matrix differs:
                    Side A: T 1 BS-2634 40218-1-2 E
                    Side B: T 1 BS-2634 40219-1-2 B

                        I believe I have a variant:
Matrix is ...-1A and ...-1 instead of ...-2 and ...-3 and the LP labels differ from those shown: no bold "Stereo" at the bottom, WB info along the bottom wraps 1/2way. Textured cover w/ hype sticker directly affixed. Burbank 1911 R-3 sleeve dates it as 1972 release, however, and with the Palm labels makes it closer to this than the original release.
